There are few leaders in the history of mankind who are as solely responsible for the destruction of their countries as Mugabe. Way, way, way worse than Chavez.
Mugabe is an ******* , scum and terrible excuse for a human beinf but i think Al-Bashir is even worse. He's the ****head behind the genocide in Darfur and that imho is hard to top.
Either way the world would be better off with both these guys six feet under.

God obviously hates Cuba and Cubans if Chavez gets the gift of an early demise (and if you die under 65, it is a gift) while the Castros couldn't die if you shot them point blank.

Hugo to me ranked very low on scale of things. Only reason he got attention was because of the stunts he pulled in media and the fact the world media hyped him up to be the counter to George Bush in West

Yeah, he behaved as somewhat of a dictator, but he just had a different political philosophy and didn't starve or brutalize his people.
GDP increased by about a factor of 4 during Chavez' tenure. It would be hard to argue that his policies didn't have some positive impacts on the nations.

Considering that Venezuela's industrial output has decreased in such a way due to his policies, and that imports have been needed to meet demand, and that shortages of food have become common place I would wager that that increase is mostly due to his luck of being elected during an oil boom.

While it's hard to find reliable statistics, I would guess that food consumption in Venezuela has increased since the mid 1990s and that food shortages aren't any more common now than they were previously. Venezuela's economy was a mess during much of the '80s and '90s.
Also, Venezuela's economy has been heavily dependent on oil for at least half a century. That is not an issue unique to Chavez' presidency.

If that is true why haven't producers been able to meet the demand?
I don't really believe that shortages were as common as they are now, and I know this is anecdotal, but I would have heard something, along with my family who are still there (and who aren't rich "Imperio" puppets)
It's always been a mess, even when it was "good" in the 70s, as oil dependency is never a good thing, and specially now.
Something tells me that with the dramatically less charismatic political upper class the international media will be a bit less forgiving with the administration's **** ups.
