What was the best series that ended 4-0? Maybe a series where each game could have gone either way but happened to all go in one team's favour.
habs-sabres, 1993. okay, the games couldn't all have gone either way, but only because of the guy in your avatar, who was given by closeness of all four games, including OT in the last three, his greatest stage.
but i suspect this was the answer you were fishing for.
Pittsburgh vs. Chicago in the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals. With the exception of Game 2 in which the Pens won 3-1, all the other games were very close.
Game 1: Penguins win 5-4 after comeback.
Game 2: Penguins win 3-1
Game 3: Penguins win 1-0
Game 4: Penguins win 6-5 in a shootout (no, not that kind).
Another series would be Chicago vs. Vancouver from the 1995 Western Conference Semi-Finals. Three of those games went into overtime with the Hawks winning every time, it could have just as easily been the other way around.
Game 1: Chicago wins 2-1 in OT.
Game 2: Chicago shuts out Vancouver 2-0.
Game 3: Chicago wins 3-2 in OT.
Game 4: Chicago wins 4-3 in OT.
From the memory of someone who was 13 at the time the Montreal-St. Louis 1968 final. The expansion Blues got a break because the winner of the west division automatically got a place in the final series but they made an interesting series of it. Montreal won all the games against the by one goal with two of the games going into overtime.
Glenn Hall was great and won the Conn Smythe for keeping the Blues in the series. There was a lot of interest because the Blues featured a lot old Habs like Doug Harvey, Dickie Moore, Jean-Guy Talbot, Jim Roberts, Red Berenson and Noel Picard as well as coach Scotty Bowman and I'm sure they would have loved to pull off an upset. The rest of the team was a mix of young players who finally got a chance to play in the NHL and some other old vets like Al Arbour and Gerry Melnyk. For some of the veteran players it was their last really great NHL moment.
This series was a lot closer than anyone expected given the difference in personnel of each team but with a few lucky bounces the Blues may have pulled off their own Miracle on Ice.
75-76 finals between the Flyers and Habs. Defending champ vs the #1 contender. Beauty vs Brawn.
It's the closest final sweep I've seen. The Flyers could have easily won any of the games, and the Habs only out scored them by 5 goals in the entire series, one above the minimum. Who knows how that series would have gone if Parent and MacLeish had played?

Detroit's first Cup in forever, and Lindros' ONLY trip to the finals?
The 1997 finals had great stories heading in. And while I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Lindros and the Flyers get completely embarrassed, it's hard to be excited when the result isn't really in doubt
It's pretty easy to roll your eyes at the expansion 1967-68 St. Louis Blues making the finals against Montreal, especially after finishing 24 points behind them in the regular season.
The Blues were pretty gutsy, however, and even though they were swept, all four games were decided by one goal and two games went into OT.
Any one have any idea if Montreal played down to St. Louis' level during the series?

That was also a string of poor Stanley Cup finals. 1995-'98 was just terrible when it came to the Cup final. 1997 was a series that I always just though Philly was never involved in. Lindros was invisible and it was such a contrast to the same man who had dominated the first three playoff rounds. Strangely enough, we haven't seen a sweep in the finals since 1998.
I've got to go with 1976 or 1992 here. 1976 was a series I am sure Clarence Campbell was secretly praying for Montreal. It was almost a passing of the torch and a Philly win could have swayed the NHL in a different direction.
1992 was Mario in top form. Not to mention Game 4 was pretty much the coming out party for Hasek.
HM to the Habs/Sabres division final in 1993. Every game ended up 4-3 and 3 of them were decided in OT. Lucky for the Habs, Hasek wouldn't break out until the following season. They got the mediocre era Fhur.
