I would be willing to throw in a bag of used pucks and a seat from the old St. Louis Arena/Checkerdome on the Blues side. But the Rangers would have to come up.. add Staal on the Rangers end, and we've got a deal.
With the trade rumors around Gaborik and the Blues' struggles to find a star winger, I wanted to see what some proposals would look like that might rectify both of those. Both teams need a shake up.. how could they make this happen?
To STL: Gaborik, Del Zotto
To NYR: Jackman, Stewart
STL gets a star winger who, granted, tends to be inconsistent, but they need a star. Del Zotto comes in as a young left defense, which the Blues lack.
NYR gets a defensive defenseman to stabilize the D core, and replaces Gaborik with Stewart, who's younger and perhaps has more long-term upside.
Thoughts?
a 40 goal scorer (when we have trouble scoring) for a Dman (which is the Rangers strength).
No interest in any pieces you've mentioned. Del Zotto+=Shattenkirk, and Steen comes nowhere near Gaborik.
I'm a Rangers fan, and there is more between Del Zotto and Shattenkirk than a +. But I feel the difference between Gaborik and Steen may counteract that.
Yeah, I thought as much since I'd do it in a second.
But is there a deal to be made around Gaborik and Del Zotto + prospect for Steen and Shattenkirk?
thats still a horribad trade for the Rangers. the difference between Gaborik and Steen is VERY significant.. and the Rangers already have a pretty good defense as it is. We don't need to give up a 40 goal scorer to acquire another Dman, unless you think its going to fix the PP? which is laughable, since thats been a detriment for years no matter who we bring in.
Nope. We'd have no interest in Gaborik. He doesn't fit our style and we can't afford him.
Steen and Shattenkirk are simply not available.
I think Gaborik could break either way on the Blues. He is a finisher, and with the Blues gaudy possession numbers he could get a lot more chances to finish than he gets on the Rangers.
Does the Blues carry an internal cap? I thought that their financial situation was improving and that Gaboirk would fit nicely under the cap.

We have a very strict budget, and Gaborik would blow it out of the water.
Our center depth would be destroyed in moving Steen.
Our defense would take a big hit by having Jackman and Polak together as neither are very good at moving the puck.
We would end up having Gaborik, Oshie, Stewart, and Tarasenko on the right wing when fully healthy. Perron, McDonald, and Schwartz would be on the left, so we have no need for wingers.

Steen is an extremely underrated player. A very good ES scorer and an excellent puck possesion player. Shattenkirk is also IMO a lot better than Del Zotto, and the fact that he is a righty means he fits our defensive makeup a lot better than Michael does.
Gaborik to the Blues is a no. So any deal involving Gaborik to the Blues is not possible. The Blues simply do not have the money to take on Gaborik. It's not a knock on Gaborik as a player at all. The Blues have lots of depth on wing they do not need to trade for a winger. We just don't have the money to trade for a 7.5 million winger.
So any deal with Gaborik to the Blues will make zero sense for the Blues. We cannot open a hole on the team for a player that does not fill a need or we can afford.
DZ and Polak would not be a good enough 2nd pairing IMO. Polak is not as good as Jackman and DZ is not as good as Shattenkirk.
Steen is a center this year for us.
McDonald is not a center for our system and his injuries have forced him to wing full time.
Oshie does not have the speed to play center full time and is perfect with Backes on the wing. He is not moving off that line full time.
Schwartz has been a winger in college, WJC, and in the NHL.
Trading Steen would make Sobotka or eventually Arnott our 3rd line center.
Regardless we can't afford Gaborik, so it's a straight no go.
Yeah I get that. When I made the proposal I was thinking W+D for W+D. I didn't know that Steen had moved back to C or that the Blues wouldn't be able to afford Gaborik.
I thought Steen was playing LW? Backes and Berglund are centers, MacDonald used to play C, Schwartz was a C in college, didn't Oshie use to play C?
Put Jackman with Petro and DZ with Polak. Or did they already try Jackman with Petro and it was a disaster?
Steen has been a center for us all year. McDonald is hurt, and even if he were healthy he wouldn't be a center. He hasn't played center since his days in Anaheim. He doesn't have the size or strength to play center in our system. Although I will admit they've talked about moving Schwartz to center. I don't like that though. He's a rookie who's having a hard enough time adjusting. Oshie hasn't been a center since he got to the NHL. well, he may have played center for a few games, but long term hes been a winger. Last year they tried Jackman with Petro and it was a disaster. They tried it again this year and it's been a lot better, but I don't see us moving Shattenkirk, barring overpayment of course.
We are unlikely to be able to keep Gaborik after his contract expires => trade him before he walks.
Contending teams in need of goals do not give up their scorers for that reason.
He has struggled massively this season. 5 of his 7 goals have come in 2 games. Half of his points have come in 2 games, and 78.5% of his points have come in 4 games.
