No problem with giving Holzer an extension. He has played well for a rookie getting utilized as a top pairing defenseman against other teams best players. I think a former Norris winning, Stanley Cup Champion coach knows how to evaluate players.

He's had some rough patches but he's shown enough good ones that makes this a solid move. Hard to believe anyone would complain about this.

I think this is a reminder that Nonis is going up and down the current roster and making decisions about who are the keepers and who may have priced themselves out of Toronto's plans. We still have 11 active players with expiring contracts who will be RFA or UFA unless extended like Holzer. Expect more announcements of signings (or trades) in March.

Meh. He's like Schenn without the talent. As long as it's cheap I don't care.

And yet Jake Gardiner remains in the AHL, and Liles hasn't played in weeks.

Treading water with this. Our defence is our most glaring issue.

Liles hasn't played in weeks for a reason. Besides a couple games, he's looked pretty awful this year.

I'm good with Gardiner getting time in the AHL for as long as the team is winning. You have to think he's almost a 100% right now and management has been asking about him after every game he plays according to Eakins.

The Book of Komisarek is soon to be checked out.

And I can't be the only one who thinks Holzer has a kick-ass first name for a hockey player! Best first name ever!

Good signing if the amount is alright. Young , solid, depth dman. I'm hoping for around 1 mil per season...

Numbers game. I believe if Gardiner plays in 2 more games (if not, the number is small), he is no longer waiver-exempt. Once some bodies are moved, I'm sure Gardiner will be back with the big club. Probably a handshake agreement with the team on that one.

Edit: Close. He needs to play 3 games - since he signed his first pro contract between 18-20, he needs to meet or exceed 80 games to become waiver-eligible.

It's pretty unbelievable the flak he gets, let alone this contract extension gets.

Sounds like Holzer... except he's had like one good game .

Liles has been good this year and has no business in the press-box. We're winning games, but you're seeing how badly we're suffering with breaking out, outlet passes, and quick decisions. Elements that John-Michael Liles contains.

Carlyle probably has alot to do with him comes and goes on this Maple Leafs roster too and I have full faith in him knowing who to play and where

Not a fan, never thought he was very good.

Not surprised he's signed though, doesn't make sense to let him walk.

I definitely do not judging from his defensive pairings.

Every underlying stat shows the Leafs defence as being the beneficiaries of two hot goalies. I suppose you think Fraser's +/- means more than absolutely nothing, too?

Holzer has been really solid for the Leafs. I'm not sure why this is getting negative reviews.

He's mobile, physical and can move the puck decently.

Once he settles in, likely in the #5-6 spot, he'll be a solid player to have.

Is he a core player? Probably not but he's showing his worth.

This has no negative impact on the team. I'm not sure why people don't think he deserves to stay for the next couple years.

Carlyle seems to love his game, playing him over Liles speaks volume.

I disagree... he has been okay but nothing exceptional. Wasn't really being used on the PP either at the time (Kostka for some very weird reason was seeing 1st unit PP time with Dion). He has still been way better than Holzer which is why I dont get the Holzer extension. He will be an RFA and lets face it, nobody is going to offer sheet him so why rush to sign him to an extension? Unless its something reasonable like 900K but seeing as he is being given top pairing minutes despite being so bad, Holzer will be demanding and getting more from this extension. I mean we were just talking about him as a candidate to be sent down to the AHL and it would give him very little, if any leverage in contract talks when he becomes an RFA.

Maybe because he's taking time away from a Canadian wannabee?

Desjardins estimates that about 40% of the game is captured by Corsi analysis.

Leafs went from having one of the worst goaltending tandems in the league last season to one of the best all in one year

Great. I like him. Always nice to have defenders the organization have developed signed. Now we know the term but what kind of money are we talking about?

And the Leafs defense clearing out the majority of rebounds has no effect on this hot goaltending? We are tenth in GA/G, thats a product of good defense and good goaltending. Not one or the other.
