Is Twitter a good thing?

I'm really not sure. Part of me thinks Twitter is entirely harmless, but another part of me thinks it's an epic symbol of the decline of North America's communication and news researching skills, in the advent of our over reliance on technology, primarily the internet.

I understand the appeal, but I'm not sure it's a positive force in terms of communication and research skills.

Also, I can understand how it's useful for things like sports, but at the same time... it brings up some pretty ridiculous news stories and "controversies" which don't contribute anything to the NHL, or other sports leagues.

Not all live tweeting aren't totally lame... but it seems a large chunk are. It just seems like such a ridiculous method to report news from a scene. 140 character limit???

All I can say, is that I'm glad I learned to read and write, and learned to use computers before the advent of twitter. My spelling hasn't been totally decimating by spell check, since I really didn't have a lot of exposure to it until like grade 5, when we got our first computer. And I don't think spell check is necessarily all that bad for your spelling if you make note of your errors.

When it gets down to using things like 4 and ridiculous shortened versions of words. like "thx" or "luv".

and seriously twitter speak? retweet is about the only one i've been forced to recognize. the rest of this stuff? "twittercal mass", "twittectomy", "twittcrastination". ... more in this link.

I really think the negatives outweigh the positives when it comes to twitter. Hopefully by the time I have kids, people will have moved on. One can hope...

so anyways... what's your opinion on Twitter: "good", "bad", "evil", or "doesn't matter at all"... what do you think?

Twitter, like most things, is all about how you use it.

I use twitter mainly to get up to date information on sports, news etc., to see into my favourite celebrities (mostly athletes) daily lives, and to keep up with my friends.

Twitter is awesome for me.

Meh. Part of me dislikes it, but part of me recognizes that language changes considerably over time and this is, at worst, just increasing the rapidity of change.

As far as the proliferation of information is concerned; it's a good and a bad thing. It's good because information disseminates instantaneously. A news story suddenly becomes a global phenomenon within hours, not days.

On the other hand, this instantaneous information proliferation is prone to mass misinformation effects. Fortunately, the aforementioned benefit means any misinformation is also rapidly exposed as misinformation. Proof is in how long it took the KONY campaign to gain mass-appeal, and then how quickly the backlash came.

Twitter is populated by idiots.

And so is the rest of the internet.

Learn to deal with it.

Also: why would you ask a poll-style question but not make a poll?

As much of a good thing as Friendster, LiveJournal, and MySpace was. It will soon be usurped by another social media site, just like Facebook will.

Is steel a good thing? Is mass production a good thing?

Everything has its pro and con sides. In the case of technology, unless it's inherently damaging (like leaded gasoline or CFCs, both of which were invented by the same guy), whether it's used for good or bad is reliant upon the people who use it.

seeing as the number one source for news in the last 500 years in newspaper headlines, I would say its even more effective than ever.

I rarely ever use it as I really don't care on a day to day basis if Mick Foley clipped his toe nails in a lobby at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport in front of Michelle Rodriquez.

Twitter is the best and quickest way to keep up to date with news and sports.

The only thing that annoys me is the TT's that get trending, today's examples;

Bieber is our Buzz Lightyear
Laugh like Niall
Demi makes us Stronger
Michael Jackson is perfect

Which is why you avoid using the Twitter website and use a client instead.

Aside from getting up to the minute hockey news, it's useless.

It's useless and a example of social media being nothing but BS.

The internet sucks and after I graduate from University next I'm getting of my computer.
