This one, quite frankly, baffles me. Why didn't New Jersey just sign him to a contract if they wanted him? Unless Kostopoulos didn't want to sign there, in which case, why would you claim someone who didn't want to be there?!

Probably didn't explore that avenue, or didn't need to until recently.

He was on a PTO in Wilkes Barre and played well, I guess when that expired the Penguins signed him to a 2-way contract to keep him in Wilkes Barre and the Devils saw an opportunity to add a bottom 6 grinder/depth forward.

An improvement over Janssen.

Because then Pittsburgh would claim him off waivers

Except the Devils would have no need to waive him if they plan to use him on their team. And if they plan to send him to the AHL, he would have to clear waivers again!

Probably because they would have had to put him on waivers and risk being the 30th team out of 30 to take a flyer on him or wait until someone signed him and be the 16th of 30 teams to get him.

Lou knew there was interest from at least one other team IMO.

I like Nonstopoulos! I would have taken him in Montreal instead of Armstrong

It's good to see him get another chance in the NHL, he is much better than a bunch of 4th liners that already played in the NHL this season.

Is that true though? He was technically playing in another league when the NHL season started (as he was on a PTO). Would this be like O'Reilly where he would have to go through Waivers to join an NHL team since he wasn't under contract? (or is that just the case for playing over-seas)?

EDIT: CBA says that only applies to leagues outside of North America, so your statement appears to be correct

Quote:
In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outside
North America
after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his
Club, he may thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs)
only if he has first either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the
Playing Season, any such Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or
Loaned only after again clearing Waivers or through Waiver claim

Nice, he should be in the NHL even if it's just as a reserve forward.

Just for players over-seas.

He wouldn't have had to go on waiver to stay in the NHL.

Well, even if he didn't want to sign there - because he was more interested in playing for the Penguins, for example - that's a situation of the past now. He had a choice in where to sign, but he can't really afford to let it show that playing for the Devils wasn't his first choice. He has a lot more to lose than the Devils.

Unless he can replace Hedberg in net I'm not too sure what ol' Lou was thinking here.

A spark to the line-up perhaps? If he is intended to be on the NHL roster, that is, which is pretty likely.

TC asks an interesting question.

Only answer I can come up with is Lou's seen enough of Cam Janssens and acquired the first fourth liner he saw to take Cam's 3 minutes of ice time every 5 games*.

*This isn't to say Kostopoulus isn't capable of more.

Anyone else getting a weird optical illusion where the "a" in "ain't" is lower than the rest of the sentence?

@CVBombulie
Kostopoulos also said New Jersey was one of the teams his agent was talking to over the last few months so it's not out of the blue.

I guess a few teams offered him try-outs once the lock-out was over and TK chose the Penguins' organisation. NJ probably wanted him but they didn't have space for him at the NHL level.

He probably wanted to go somewhere he was familiar with, as well.

And if he had to spend some time in the minors, what place better than Wilkes-Barre? He's a rock star down there, aside from Dennis Bonvie, he's the most popular guy in the team's history. He could run for mayor up there.

Except for the fact that Cam was sent to the minors after three games and only recalled yesterday, before being sent back down again today.

As long as you limit his minutes to under 10 minutes a night he is an effective player just don't expect much from him.
