Sounds like he could be a Smith type actually. Maybe not as high end but a great skater with a bit of a nasty edge. Everyone says hes a great hitter and hes had a few fights back in his USHL days. His flow is sick too

They should sign him this year

Same feelings. He could THE player like everybody is saying we don't have in the system.

Athanasiou was drafted as 6'0, now he is listed 6'2. Not bad "development".

Athanasiou is said to have the best skating in our system as far as forwards go at least. his size is not a disadvantage and he has above average stick handling ability and a good shot. so on paper he has some really high potential that the wings could see during his limited time in London.

my only real question is Tomas Jurco looked like an stud in juniors and we all(most of us) expected him to play at a very high level in the AHL this year, some even thinking possible Wings time(a lot on mlive. I think I only saw 1 post saying that on the boards) Jurco has since went on to completely play below our expectations. up until recently where he appears to have adjusted the AHL.

How does Greek Lightning compare to Jurco at this age, and should we slow down on our growing expectations out of him?

Don't know anyone who thought that Jurco had a possibility of playing on the Wings this year

it was a lot of mlive users who I assume mostly only saw the youtube vids. but I also know the local news has done a report on him in the beginning of the season and had talked about him being so good he could have the chance. while it was sad to know there was a .0001% chance of that happening. I only bring it up because he is the prospect I really compare AA to although idk why.

Jurco's post-draft year was better than AA's current season, but Jurco was 8 months older. AA's final year in junior next season could very well be equally good or better.

Pulkkinen wasn't chosen to Finland's latest pre-WJ camp roster, so hopefully he'll be coming over soon.

Another game, another highlight reel goal by Athanasiou.

Comes down the wing, throws the puck through the defenders leg, then avoids two defenders and goes top shelf on Altshuller.

3-1 Colts. Athanasiou has 3 points and is tied for second in OHL playoff scoring with 5 goals and 7 assists in 6 games. Has a point in all of his games.

Wow, he's showing why he was considered a top 15 pick last year. I'd like to see him finish the season on this tear and continue into next season with the same intensity. If he does I'd have no problem trading any of our more NHL ready prospects for something we may need.

He was a bit over a P/G this year next year I'd hope he's 1.2-1.4 P/G.

Thanks for the update!

I can't wait to see this kid once we puts on a little more weight. He's could be a real special player if he keeps developing.

Hudon had a goal again, 6+1 in 6 games. They lost 5-3, down 1-0 in the series.

Frk ended up with 3 assists, but really had nothing to do with the third one.

McKee 0+0.

Edit. Slowwww.

Where did this guy found his form? He really looked like a lost prospect. Or just a hot streak?

Athanasiou chosen as the OHL player of the week. 6 points in 3 games.

Here's the highlights from his game 2. Check out the goal at 0:55: http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/v...1838d9949199dc

All goals, all Athanasiou. That speed is just phenomenal.

my only real question is Tomas Jurco looked like an stud in juniors and we all(most of us) expected him to play at a very high level in the AHL this year, some even thinking possible Wings time(a lot on mlive. How does Greek Lightning compare to Jurco at this age, and should we slow down on our growing expectations out of him?
Jurco doesn't have NHL level speed. He's agile, but he doesn't have Athanasiou kind of speed.
That said, I don't think Athanasiou has Jurco's offensive awareness.

The big question with a guy like Athanasiou is hockey sense.

Is he going to be Matthieu Dandenault? Darren Helm? Ryan Kesler? or Sergei Fedorov?

IMO, based on hands alone, he's better than Dandy.
He's more skilled than Helm, but I'm not sure he has Helm's intensity.

What I see is a guy who could be better than Filppula one day

Love how he fearlessly cuts to the middle, or flat out tries to go through defenders. He might need to use his speed a little smarter at the next level, but hey he's not there yet.

A2 reminds me of what we expected Ferraro and Emmerton to be in juniors, if we combined those two.

By January of next year, I think he'll be our top rate prospect
