NHL Realignment to bring new rivalry?

With Detroit being geographically close to Buffalo a new rivalry is bound to surface. And again between the Leafs and Wings. What else does the new alignment mean for Buffalo?

Until Buffalo is relevant as a team, nothing major in terms of rivalries will happen.

I mean Detroit isn't exactly a top team right now either and they're only getting older.

If they stay with this format for more than a couple seasons, divisional rivalries will naturally develop with teams that knock a divisional opponent out of the playoffs, or prevent them from getting there in the first place.

I agree completely. Do you guys think Buffalo is getting the short end of the stick with the new realignment in terms of travelling to Florida? Do you think that will play a role?

I'm sure the players and beat writers will enjoy the warmer weather during the winter.

I think realignment is going to play a big part in who our next coach is because we've got 8 teams that between them play arguably 5 or 6 different styles. I think we'll need someone who's a "player's kind of coach", old school, but can really motivate and appeal to a young team. One guy whose name hasn't been thrown out there but I think would be an intriguing hire would be Doug Gilmour.

A other few things I'm looking forward to:

A Sabres-Panthers rivalry to echo the Buffalo-Miami, Bills-Dolphins sentiment (Squish The Fish?? How about Kick the Kittens??), and of course, more opportunity to boo Brian Campbell (provided he's still there)
The development of a Detroit-Tampa rivalry fueled by the Stevie Y connection.
4 of the original 6
Todd Bertuzzi facewashing Lucic on a regular basis

I think after a couple of years, it will be a good rivalry. Two passionate hockey towns. All you'll need is a little bad blood on the ice to spark it.

The Sabres and the Red Wings were in the same division back in the 1970s.

I think the division might be a temporary home for the Florida teams. If expansion or a team moving brings back the Nordiques or they get a second team in Toronto; I'm sure that team would be in our division.

Well, crap. I live in Michigan and enjoyed rooting for Detroit. This could be awkward.

Honestly, judging from most of the fans around here, the Toronto - Detroit rivalry will be far more heated than anything with Buffalo, at least at the outset.

The Sabres and Red Wings have never been in the same division, have they?

I like that Detroit is going to be in the same division as Buffalo. It gives me more dates to schedule a family road trip to visit my friend in Detroit and for her to visit us.

It's going to be a very difficult division. Several strong organizations

I can't see one person in the orginization being upset about going to FLA every month or so.

It only a 2-230 hour flight so it shouldn't be too bad
