[CBJ/WPG] Tomas Kubalik to Winnipeg for Spencer Machacek

Rob Mixer ‏@RobMixer

This is a big add for Brad Larsen's team in its playoff push. Machacek has picked up 93-132-225 in 341 career AHL games...will help. #CBJ

Shawn Mitchell ‏@smitchcd

#CBJ acquire F Spencer Machacek from Winnipeg in exchange for F Tomas Kubalik.

Tomas could use the change of scenery, lets see if he makes something of himself now in a new organization.

It seems like Machacek has been close to making the Thrashers/Jets team for a long time. What seems to happen to him a lot is he comes on at the end of the year, plays well for the team, but is beaten out when camp comes along. I wouldn't be surprised to see him full-time in the NHL at this point, he's good enough, but he might just end up being one of those guys who never quite makes it.

Kubalik has looked real good when he's up in the NHL, he could be a Tomas Holmstrom type. Winnipeg stole this.

To struggling Ahl players that could both use a change of scenery. Pretty boring trade but it makes sense for both teams

Cheveldayoff continues to display his inability to build a winning team by trading away a guy who has greatly impressed in every NHL game he's ever played for an absolute bust who couldn't even make the Blue Jackets.

airlines stop it. you babbled like this in the jets thread too

mahachek was placed on waivers earlier and NO team claimed him... clearly youre the only one who thought he looked great in every game he played in lol.. cause 30 gms wouldnt claim him for free. he publicly pouted when he lost his spot in camp this year, and has been slumping heavily in st johns (-25 yikes)... get over it

i think macho does have some skill. and in the right situation could be effective. this trade def makes sense for both teams though. two guys that were seemingly unable to crack the lineup conistsently.. boring change of scenery trade

Kubalik has shockingly effective hands, but has not been a great skater and had a concussion issue at one point. We were looking at him being a future Tomas Holmstrom type, but he wasn't progressing.

That said, he was very much liked here. He earned immortality for one of his quotes in the preseason, during an interview after a game in which he scored a hat trick but we lost 5-4:
Quote:
"Coach told me stay in front of the net and try to tip in, and (take) passes in front," Kubalik said. "I stay, they pass, I score. . . . I feel very good, but maybe better when we win."
Seriously, gotta love that attitude.

Hopefully Machacek can impress here. What little I've been able to find on him certainly makes him sound good.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Machacek was drafted higher in the same draft and has higher PPG totals in both the AHL and NHL. So, how did Winnipeg win this trade?

He was really impressive when he finished last season with the Jets. Looked like a real gem, but didn't impress (in a lot of ways, apparently) at training camp and wasn't happy to be sent down. Hopefully Columbus will work out well for him. It's a case of a change of scenery. Hope things work out for him but he was clearly done with Winnipeg.

It's likely to be a win-win, which is what trades should be. Two players who just need a fresh start.

First trade for Kekalainen! Here is why :

Quote:
@Aportzline
Told Tomas Kubalik requested a trade about a month ago. New #CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen granted his wish, and quickly.
Seems like they got some value from an average AHLer that wanted out. It kinda reminds the time were the Habs claimed Patrick Traverse on waivers and a few weeks later he asked for a trade (typing this makes me laugh )so the Habs traded him back to his former team (San Jose) for Mathieu Biron.

Anyway, I remember Kubalik being very solid in his first year in the AHL (53 points in 76 games). Jackets fans had hope that he would turn into a 20-25 goals scorer in the NHL but it didn't work out so well.

In regard to value, draft position doesn't matter when it's almost six years later.

Haven't really liked any Jets move since they moved to Winnipeg.

Not sure why diSpencer wasn't called up considering Jets' so-so lineup, or why they essentially traded Poni (proven) for Tangradi (bust), but it wasn't too long ago that diSpencer looked pretty good for them.

Certainly more upside than Kubalik, but now that upside may vanish. Oh well.

At this point it's an AHLer swap.

I'd start to get REALLY concerned when the Kane trade happens.

I'm not concerned yet though. Just marginally disappointed in these post-move moves.

I know that. My point is, every single factor favors Machacek. So, how could Winnipeg have stolen Kubalik?

On the Winnipeg side Machecek's exit has been brewing since the start of the AHL season.

Management was unhappy with the way he conducted himself in St. John's from training camp on.

Who knows? If Machacek plays like he did down the stretch for the Jets last year, you won't be disappointed. He just wasn't going to be playing that way for us, for whatever reason that was. So it goes.

I remember very clearly during the NHL Network's 2007 draft special that JD and Jarmo were interviewing Machecek for the Blues. Guess they still like him.
