It could be worse for the Ducks I suppose. They could have lost their franchise center for nothing. Hopefully they can keep Perry too but this sets a REALLY bad precedent for his deal.
He had one bad year, it is the outlier of his career, and he admitted that his new off the ice distractions took a toll on his on ice performance and he took measures to correct them that are as of now working. Anyone that watched the Ducks last year will tell you that he did not take the year off, in fact it was his hardest working season since becoming the top center in Anaheim. Effort, was not a question that many of us had with Getzlaf last season.

As for the bolded, just no.

"Overpayment" because big, skilled franchise #1 centers grow on trees right?

I think there is a distinct lack of understanding regarding the new CBA, and the difference between salary earned and the cap hit.

Unfortunately, being a good writer and sports journalist doesn't always mean a good head for figures.
Then they aren't good journalists (then again, that's a pretty typical accusation leveled against sports journalists - they frequently aren't good journalists). And/or they're in need of editors who realize it. The difference between cap and salary is pretty basic. If they're going to provide analysis and not just report facts they have a responsibility to actually understand what they're analyzing.

I kind of agree. #1 Center is the most sought after position in hockey. I'm sure Montreal and Toronto would pony up TONS of draft picks to get a guy like Getzlaf.

8.25M for 8 years is brutal. I would have traded him if I were Anaheim instead of giving him that much. Ouch.

I don't blame the Ducks for paying that much. Franchise 1st Line centers don't come around that often, unless you're Pittsburgh.

Also, Post #500!

Not to mention we will ignore completely different CBA's as it is more fun to discuss this way.

Because of the NHL 's long history with the cap?

I don't know why people are saying 8.25 is a huge overpayment.

It's market Price (maybe +250k) for Getzlaf.

Everyone will realize in the summer when Semin and Perry get 7m+ deals.

Yeah, might as well use the cap space. If you went to the FA market and were to pay 8.25 million, I'd rather have Getzlaf rather than Fleischmann + Upshall

Who cares what he makes? All the fan cares about is the cap hit and Richards is $6.666667M.

$8.25 Million for a guy who scored 11 goals last season. Getzlaf is not the fourth best player in the NHL, but that's what he is getting paid like now. Terrible.

I hope Perry does not expect that kind of money.....

Somone will over pay for Perry but Getz is a #1 center and they are more Valuable....

I would offer Perry 7years at 7 and would hope he excepts

Crosby makes 86.4M over the next 8 years. Getzlaf makes 66. Crosby makes 2.55M more per year than Getzlaf.

The Ducks have over $19M in cap space that will be available this summer, and that is with 15 signed players. Their top UFA forwards are Perry, Selanne and Koivu. On defense their UFAs will be Lydman and Lovejoy and their RFAs are Palmieri, Beleskey, and McMillan.

To suggest that the Ducks will struggle to re-sign Perry as a result of locking Getzlaf up is simply an uninformed opinion. They have plenty of room to give Perry a raise of $3M from his current salary.

As for those suggesting Getzlaf is overpaid, what exactly do you think he'd sign for as a UFA in an open market, on a shorter term? A desperate team would pony up the money Getzlaf just signed for, maybe even more so when you consider what the likes of Brad Richards, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, and Daniel Briere all signed for when they hit the open market. And Getzlaf is considerably superior in every way to those players.

You would have traded your #1 center, and obliterated your chances to accomplish anything that season? That would be an interesting decision. Do you think you'd be keeping your job long after that?

is the 7 year limit only for free agents?

another contract that the team will regret eventually.

Good. Backdiving contracts were a disgrace.

Can someone refresh my memory: What's the most a contract can now go down from year to year?

In the new CBA I think 7.5 million would have been fair... I expected this type of contract on the free agent market not really from Anaheim. At the end of the day he's a number 1 centre, so if there paying and extra million 0.5 - 1.0 million a year it really isn't that much of a concern for a player of his talent... His agent did a good job, he got a high salary AND term. Hopefully he doesn't slow down a gear since receiving his big contract like many players do...

And then spend the next 8 years looking for a #1 C?

Or if you get one in FA, one that you'll have to spend 8M on?

Solid idea!!!

Signed to a contract that can no longer be made under the new CBA rules.

Too many people in here that don't understand the landscape that the new CBA created. I, for one, like it. Count me as another one that thinks this is a fair deal.
