Has Kane passed Toews as best in shootout?

We’ve come to know Jonathan Toews as one of the best shootout guys in the NHL. He absolutely lit the league on fire early on in the shootout and you combine that with what he did in the World Junior Championships and I don’t think Hawks fans would want anyone else with the point on the line in the shootout.

But has Patrick Kane overtaken him as the best shootout guy on the Hawks? I haven’t thought about it much but I realize the great shootout goals Kane has had lately the past couple years in the shootout. I remember his go to move used to be the forehand, backhand roof shot but he really started to struggle with it and it wasn’t working much. Toews is assumed the best shootout guy on the team and is always the 1st shooter, no matter what. But Kane has been better than him quite significantly the past 2 years.

Patrick Kane
07-08: 7 goals/9 shots = 77.8%
08-09: 3 goals/9 shots = 33.3%
09-10: 4 goals/15 shots = 26.7%
10-11: 3 goals/10 shots = 30.0%
11-12: 6 goals/12 shots = 50.0%
12-13: 3 goals/6 shots = 50.0%

Jonathan Toews
07-08: 0 goals/0 shots = 00.0%
08-09: 6 goals/10 shots = 60%
09-10: 8 goals/14 shots = 57.1%
10-11: 5 goals/11 shots = 45.4%
11-12: 3 goals/7 shots = 42.9%
12-13: 2 goals/6 shots = 33.3%

Small sample size, but Toews has been trending downwards for 4 years now. Kane started hot, went a couple years where he wasn’t very good, but has been lights out the past 2 seasons so far.

Last 3 seasons:
Jonathan Toews: 10 goals/24 shots= 41.7%
Patrick Kane: 12 goals/28 shots = 42.9%

What does everyone think? Too small a sample size? Why has Toews % dropped every year other than the obvious that the goalies know what is coming…does he need to switch it up more? And I personally think shootouts are stupid but they also can be the difference between being a playoff team and not, being a 3rd seed or a 6th seed, ect.

Also we have Toews and Kane as shootout staples...but will we find a 3rd shooter? Hey, Andrew Shaw is 1 for 1 this year so maybe he is the guy? I sure hope so.

Also statistics back up the theory that Q is an idiot when it comes to shootouts and throwing Patrick Sharp out there when he is beyond brutal.

07-08: 1 goal/5 shots = 20.0%
08-09: 1 goal/4 shots = 25.0%
09-10: 2 goals/10 shots = 20%
10-11: 1 goal/7 shots = 14.3%
11-12: 1 goal/8 shots = 12.5%
12-13: 0 goals/2 shots = 00.0%

So he has been ****ing terrible for 4 years and Q continues to throw him out there in those earlier games this season that we lost in the shootout. Why? He is obviously bad...see what someone else can do.

Kane is more creative and has better hands. Both have accurate shots. Make me choose one of them for a shootout attempt and I'd go with Kane by a hair. Toews seems to have some kind of inexplicable trickiness to his shootout attempts - every goalie in the league knows his favorite move but it still works nearly every time he tries it.

The sample size is too small. If toews makes 1 more shot last year, his number surges past Kane

I love Kane but I'd still send Toews out with the game on the line in the shootout.

Luckily its a rhetorical question, as we never have to choose one or the other.

It's so close that it doesn't really matter. If I had to only send one out this year, it would probably be Kane but I'd be comfortable with either because its so close.

Toews only seems to have one move, but who cares since it works. Kane is awesome with his creativity.

Now that they are spots 1 and 2, who do you put out in spot 3? Sharp is aweful, Hossa isn't impressive either.

So Shaw? Stalberg? Saad?

frolik. he's got good hands and his weak shot can't hurt him in a shootout. he also tore schneiders groin on a penalty shot.

Shaw obviously. He almost tore a hole in the roof on the game winner against Canucks.

No, taking account into everything. Kane has better hands and has been better recently but Toews has been better over his career and is better at hitting the net. Too often Kane overdoes the dekeing and doesn't even get the shot off or on target.
