I know it's a blog and all Replacement, but this topic has seriously been beat to death several times already, and the evidence is clear.
Halfway through the 2009/2010 season, it was decided that a scorched earth rebuild would be necessary. The route of trying to entice big name players to come to Edmonton was not working.
Rather than simply finish the season and then justify the result by saying that had the team been healthy they may have been able to compete for a playoff position, Tambellini stated that changes needed to be made and the teamís response to the injuries and losses was unacceptable. Between December and February of 2009-2010, Tambellini openly stated that the team was going into a rebuild mode and that anyone who was not committed to winning at any cost was no longer welcome.
It is now the 2012/2013 shortened season we are currently struggling with. It's easy math from there...
The saddest thing about all of this is that at least in the last couple of years there were some positives.
Hall and Eberle's rookie seasons they both looked great.
Last year Hall, Eberle and RNH looked like they were all going to become superstars.
This year... all three have taken a step back, Schultz after starting out well has sort of been a non-factor most nights and Yakupov is struggling more often than not it seems.
There is absolutely no silver lining right now. It's downright scary.
Oh I absolutely agree. Fire these boneheads tonight. I just can't help but feel that it wont happen with Katz running the ship. I think we might have hope in getting rid of Krueger at least. That would be a start.
What is just as disturbing as these games is the reaction we get from Krueger after games lately. Talking about positives that happen when they are getting dominated. He doesn't seem to have a pulse on the team and can't get anything out of them.
Yea agree with everything you said. Main reason I'm considering switching teams is I know nothing will happen after this. You think Chicago would stand for this?, Or LA?, Hell even Pittsburgh switched GM's after being this bad for 4 years with an excuse.
No need to be a *****. They didn't start selling off until the trade deadline that year. So no, until this years trade deadline, its not the fourth year. And especially not if you count it by full years, as you can't exactly do any rebuilding mid season.
Cmon, trading three young players for Heatley and signing Khabibulin are rebuild moves.
How on Earth could finishing 30th and Landing Taylor Hall not count as year one in the rebuild?
This is year 4. I can't see there being any disagreement on this one.
I would evn go earlier. I could care less wehn the team officially said we were "rebuilding". It all started when they sucked it up real hard in 2007 and drafted Gags 6th overall... that makes it year 6. Sure they werent officially rebuilding back then, but they still sucked big time and were getting high draft picks as compensation.
This team has sucked for a lot longer than the "official rebuild".
Anyone expecting changes in management are going to be disappointed. The Teflon man (a.k.a. Lowe) will only make a change only if he is forced too, and do you see Katz doing that? He's never been a "fan", he bought the Oilers for one reason and one reason only, and that is to make money. The high prices, the area, the Oilers organization more as a corporation with their excessive secrecy, rigid media control and everything else like that. I can't remember anything that he has done that wasn't a calculated business decision, and the only way he will make the actual changes that are needed is if his pocketbook is affected.
Tambysleepy (heh) won't get fired, he will get promoted upstairs just like Lowe got himself rather than actually having to face responsibility, we will see MacT as the new GM, because he's Lowe's boy and we all know a old "boy on the bus" has to be placed in that position, and we will get more years of this "exciting rebuild".
As sad as it is, this team is run by a corporation, who looks at us as purely people that will line up and just give them huge piles of money, but I feel our opinion doesn't matter, as long as we are all willing to still line up. It will take empty seats to get his attention, because considering how bad it has been for years, he still hasn't done anything other than beg for handouts from the Edmonton city council.
That's the really sad part. Any legacy and pride from the past has been destroyed utterly now by the owner and the management. They are the ones responsible for this, and only them.
Yep 530 man games lost..."tanking" at it's finest!
That's not the record mind you for teams and injuries..that would be L.A with 629 man games lost in 2003/2004!!
But i go off topic. To say that the Oilers tanked deliberately is asinine. They were decimated by injuries that year.
The moment they hired Pat Quinn on as coach the tank was on. They forgot to announce and somehow a portion of the fanbase thought Quinn wouldn't be the worst headcoach in the history of this franchise.
It was pretty much a given. Pat Quinn was like a secret weapon of suck. I said so from the start. The season was going to be one guaranteed mess under him.
As long as this team describes losses as part of a process we are ****ed. Since when is losing, let alone this badly, acceptable?
There are a great many good/great pieces on this team BUT there is zero accountability! The kids come in and learn that losing is part of a growth process. They are learning to lose not expecting to win!
The team culture has to change and fast! Tambo, Lowe get the **** out, bring in someone who won't accept these losses and will hold coaches/ players accountable!
