Vokoun told the team to stop playing "dumb hockey" going into the 2nd period Thursday

http://www.getrealhockey.com/2013/03...oment-perhaps/

"According to Ron Cook of the Post-Gazette and 93.7 The Fan, Vokoun told his teammates to stop playing dumb hockey. Stop making silly plays with the puck, play simple, and everything will fall into place."

Hope you won't mind an outsider's input, but based on Vokoun's play this season, he should be the last one openly critiquing the rest of the team.

Yeah hopefully he can play the vet motivation role in the playoffs if they don't get anyone else.

He's had about two awful games, but it's good to see someone on the team was calling out their poor defensive play overall.

Takes a lot of balls to say that after one of the worst goalie performances this team has seen last time we played Philly.

he's still a guy that will get respect in the locker room. I'm sure he took his share of the blame for his play.

He also stepped in and slammed the door after making that comment.

The guy has a front row seat as to what went on in these past two games against the, Flyers. I say it's good on him to do so, the way they play in front of the net minders directly results in their play as well. As far as I can tell TV hasn't got sucked into making dumb after the whistle antics, or getting bit by the penalty bug because of it.

The guys in front of him had more to do with that game than him.

Ballsy move, could be a defining moment in Vokoun's game this season.

If true then good on vokoun. It was exactly the right thing to say. The penguins still made a habit of playing sound defensive hockey up until last year about the time when sid came back - then everyone started trying to be a superstar. Our defensemen didn't all of a sudden get bad at playing defense - this is a team problem and if bylsma can't get it straightened out then he needs to be fired. Looks like vokoun helped him out this time.

Not saying it was a bad move. Just saying it took a lot balls.

No. It's fine getting an outsiders prospective. Although I'm sure Vokoun would be the first one to throw himself under the bus for his own performance lately. As long as he holds himself accountable then it's fine to say what he said about the rest of the guys too, imo. Like Cole said, it's what veterans are supposed to do.

But he didn't and team mates will remember that. Sad but TV said what was true. Stop playing dumb hockey. Simple and let things full into place. good for him.

That only works if you're the new vet too.

If this is true, TV's stock with me went up again. Regardless of a bad game or two, I'm still thankful to have him. I'd much rather put a sucky Vokoun in than a sucky Johnson.

It needed to be said. I don't care if it was Vokoun, Orpik or one of the skate guards at the PPG building. This team has gotten away from what works and has gotten a little stale, soft and stupid.

Sure its nice to finally beat the Flyers but no one should be happy with that win and the slopfest being played this year.

Even the players are tired of Bylsma's system failing. They are starting to ignore him and coach themselves.

As an aside am I the only one who thought by the headline that they were told something on television?

That's weird, who didn't give up any goals to win the game? This is ridiculous. I don't care if he gives up 5 goals a game for the rest of his career and immediately becomes the worst goalie in the NHL by next week. It doesn't make him less right. At least he was willing to say something when it seems no one else seemed to be.

ya I hate nicknames/abbreviations that are already abbreviations/nicknames for something else.

Kovalchuk can still go to hell for stealing Kovy

Honestly, yes. I thought they came into the locker room and a headline in an intermission report said something. I was thinking to myself... they really watch that?

Good for Vokoun, though. Like it's been said, it takes major balls to come out and say that when you've been playing poorly. My bigger question is why this wasn't stressed by the coaching staff. Hopefully this serves as a blueprint to play against the Flyers from here on out.

Disco told them to get to their game. I guarantee it.

Considering that it was the truth and it worked, this seems nitpicky.

What I like about it is he's not just speaking the truth, being a leader and motivating the skaters in front of him, but he also basically had Fleury's back in doing this.

I don't know what Fleury or the organization could ask for more from a veteran backup goalie. Maybe a little bit of cap space? But that's about it.
