why would edmonton give up its first round pick for that?

youve offered a fairly reasonable deal for a rental... forget the conditional pick and it has a chance of being accepted as a fair price. I know from experience that Edmonton fans value Smid like gold and are confident he will resign with the team so they will all tell you that your deal sucks, but as an outsider who realizes that Edmonton wont be making the playoffs this year and might not be willing to give Smid what he will be asking for... I think the value here is roughly what he is worth as a 'rental.'

so again... lose the first pick idea which is just crazy and the rest of your proposal has a chance IMO to work for both teams

Dont care the opinion on fellow Leaf fans but I'm not moving Colborne. I still have hope for him. Starting to turn it around these past 25 games. Plus Gunnarsson is our 2nd best defenceman. Smid is a good player but I dont want to give up either player. But thats just me.

Smid is a ufa, they get a younger top 4 dman, a potential big top 6 or bottom 6 center with great vision and a 3rd in a deep draft, if they cant resign him that is great value and if he wants to stay then they dont trade him it's pretty simple.

Usually the conditional pick goes in the opposite direction. It's not Edmontons problem if Toronto can or cannot sign Smid.

Something like Leafs give up whatever package + 3rd round pick, becomes a 2nd round pick if Smid resigns.

With your proposal, if Smid doesn't resign, which is completely outside of Edmontons control, they end up giving up Smid AND a 1st, which is worth a lot more than that package.

Smid is exactly what Toronto needs. He is Gunnarsson from last year, but consistently that good. Package is alright but i doubt we get the 1st

So to add to this . If If TML see the Oilers have not made changes and are going to suck again . They just do not make an offer to Smid to end up with a good pick

I have no interest in moving Smid unless its in a package for a #1 d-man. I know he is UFA, but he loves Edmonton, and I would be shocked if he leaves.

Actually not a bad deal. I am suprised that Smid has not resigned and if he doesn't word in EDM is that they will trade him come the deadline. What does a player like him command when it comes to the deadline. I would rather trade him for assets that can be used in another trade after the season is over for a top pairing dman. I think TO's 1st this year and a prospect would make sense. That way we can use those assets with other assets to get the top pairing dman that we need.

LH dman.

If we are shipping Gunnarsson, I am more than confident it will be for a RH dman. I'd venture to say that I am 90% sure. (not that the trade will go down, but that IF it were)

Exactly what I was thinking. If that were the case and I was Nonis , I just wouldn't resign him and get a high 1st round pick in a deep draft. I think a top10 pick in 2013 >Smid..

It's pretty much a lock that Smid will resign in Edmonton, likes the city and he just married a Edmonton girl. Oilers pass, if he was to be trade there would be better offers made by other teams that would help the Oilers more.

The OP changed his proposal.

Vankiller Whale's rejection was of the original one, and rightly so.

The current version of it is tilted in the other direction, better for Edmonton than it is for Toronto.

Colbourne is not a cant miss prospect, there is a chance for him to be in the NHL but very small, seeing as he plays a softer game for a big man itll be tough to play a 3rd line role.

Gunnarson was great last year but this year its be speculated he is playing through injuries and hasnt been as good.

Smid is a good shut down guy. I dont want to trade an established player for a prospect who may be good and a defenseman who may be good again and a pick. Just a step back in team development
