Twins down 1-0 in the top of the 4th to the O's. Though we have a man on and no outs with Morneau up to bat.

Tell me again how firing Tubby Smith was a good thing.
My post 3 pages ago can tell you why firing Tubby was a good thing.

And of course you mention the guy's age and his one year of experience at FIU, but you neglect to mention WHAT HE ACCOMPLISHED there. It was pretty incredible really.

And yet given his awesome one season in the Sun Belt he wasn't even thought of for the Gophers job until the U had come to the realization that no one worth a **** was remotely interested.

Good luck Richard, hope you can be half the coach your old man is and seeing as that more then anything got you the job you better at least be that.

3-1 Twins!

Parmelee had a broken bat single which scored Willingham, and Dozier tripled which Morneau and Parmelee.

Offense wasn't going to be the issue for this team, it is all about pitching and that really shouldn't be hard to improve on from what it was last year. Hell even a half a run better in the ERA dept should put them at least to .500

Yes the rotation is a big question mark. We need Diamond back ASAP and hopefully Gibson can get his head out of the gutter. We add those guys and it might be fairly respectable.

BTW whatever happened to Deduno? Is he a headcase now too or something?

Control issues. He had a good WBC but even there his control issues crept up.

I think may have also tweaked something when he got back to the Twins.

I saw him in the WBC and as you say he looked okay.

I think pitchers in baseball are like goalies in hockey - a bunch of headcases.

He assumed the Gophers job was a coveted position and he was dead wrong.

Who knows though, maybe the real Pitino will write a nice fat check for the U to get a practice facility finally built.

Personally I like taking a risk rather than settling with mediocre results.

I think this is the only way a program like Minnesota can get an elite coach, by taking a chance on a guy when he's young. An established great head coach wasn't going to come here but they all have to start somewhere.

For example-

Bobby Knight
- First head coaching job at 24
- Hired to take over Indiana at age of 32 after an 11-13 season
- 3 national titles

Coach K
- First head coaching job at 28
- Hired to take over Duke at age 33 after back to back seasons of 14-11 & 9-17
- 4 national titles

Rick Pitino
- First head coaching job at age 26 for Boston University
- Head coach at Providence by 33 and Kentucky by 37
- 1 national title

Jim Boeheim
- Hired at Syracuse at age 32 with no previous head coaching experience
- 1 national title

I'm not saying Rich will be as good as these guys but sometimes you have to take a chance to revitalize a program. The guy has learned from the best and at this point you have to just hope he can do it. As you said there isn't much on his resume, but he's done very well in his limited experience.

You know what? I agree with you.
I do like the time he spent with his dad and Billy Donovan. If you are going to learn from anyone i couldn't think of two better.

I think he's one of the more interesting hires they could have made. He's got a lot of upside...and I guess a lot of downside too, but can the Gophers really afford to just be mediocre in the Big 10 for the next 5-10 years?

Mediocre in the Big 10 means you at least get into the tourney and have a shot at a run which in turn does boost recruiting more then anything else can. Mediocre beats the hell out of crap. My problem with the Smith firing was that it was clearly done with absolutely no plan for what to do afterwards and if Teague would have gauged some interest he would have discovered that he had the best coach available that was interested in being at the U. That is why i bring up Mason so much, it reeks of what happened to Mason. At least in BB it is easier to rebuild then football.

Bjugstad making his debut right now with the Panthers - I got it on. They keep talking about him and said he's the future of the Panthers - I hope he gets his first score tonight.

I know this doesn't concern Minnesota sports, but I didn't know where else to put it:

Quote:
Ravens QB Joe Flacco will portray the late Johnny Unitas in an upcoming film, "Unitas We Stand," per Baltimore Sun
I don't even know what to say.

Compared to what Gopher fans have been subjected to, I'd say they'd take "mediocre" in a heart beat.

And JJ Hardy cames back to haunt to Twins with a 2 run shot.

Orioles up 2-0, bottom of 2nd.
