Want to save the season? Break up VHP NOW!

I am absolutely sick of constantly reading "Vanek-Hodgson-Pominville", followed by a barely competent second line and then horrendous third and fourth ones. It was bad under Ruff and is bordering on pathetic under Rolston. A top-heavy lineup has killed this team's ability to roll lines and get energy as well as secondary scoring.

Four lines that can score:

Leino-Ott-Pominville
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford
Vanek-Hodgson-Flynn
Hecht-Grigorenko-Gerbe

Porter
Scott

You won't see Ron Rolston putting together anything like that.
For as good as the top lines has been, they've had invisible nights like last night.

Why is this so hard to do?

Save it from what? It's headed exactly where it needs to be: the toilet. The very bottom of the bowl.

Every game is in conference this year. the 6 teams between us and the playoffs can't help but to keep getting points playing each other. We're not jumping up 6 spots. might as well fall down 1 more.

[insert Hitler bunker video where Sabres coaching staff (played by the Wehrmacht high command) informs Darcy Regier (played by Hilter) there will be no playoffs this year]

I'd love to see:

Vanek - Hodgson - Ott
Foligno - Ennis - Flynn/Stafford/Tropp
Leino/Gerbe - Grigorenko - Pominville
4th line

Anything that breaks up Vanek and Pominville and spreads some talent around works.

I was SO against this idea fifteen games ago. But feces is still feces, no matter if its diarrhea or solid doodie pellets. I'm fine with splitting up that line.

Whatever lines are iced will surely have flaws.

Yep, trade Vanek and Pominville for picks and prospects which will secure us a top 5 draft pick.

OH... you mean save the season by getting better and possibly even make the playoffs? .. ... ... ... PFFFpt yeah right!

Your idea is great, except that it can't be done right now. Roy or any similar player is gone, Leino has been out, and Tropp missed the season although Flynn appears to be capable of filling in. Those three players filled various top six spots last season, which allowed FES to mop up against soft competition in a 3rd line role.

The Sabres have had to ice a forward group that's missing an entire line from last season's hot run, and been forced to fill it with lesser players. Meanwhile three important D-men came in old, out of shape, or with their head in the clouds.

There is no saving this season anymore, unless you're talking about saving a top draft pick.

If it's brown, flush it down.
If it's pee, let it be.

Being one of the people who is on the tank wagon, I don't think it'd hurt at this point to mix it up.

Vanek-Hodgson-Leino
Flynn-Ennis-Pominville
Ott-Grigorenko-Stafford
Foligno-Porter-Hecht

If no Ennis tonight....

Vanek-Hodgson-Leino
Flynn-Grigorenko-Pominville
Ott-Hecht-Stafford
Gerbe-Porter-Scott

Honestly, I could see breaking up VHP making the team worse and not better.
