We have our top four on defence and it's supposed to be one of the best in the league in Edler-Hamhuis-Bieksa-Garry. You're right about a top 6 winger, but the second most pressing need is obviously a horse #3 C.

Sure. Does this elite player have a name and an acquisition cost? Can we trade Higgins+Raymond for him straight up? If not,... yeah.

Corey Perry via UFA? Possibly Marian Hossa via UFA?

It's really unfortunate that outside of Bieksa all of those guys are uncomfortable on the right side. I think we just need a small tweak on defense where we swap Ballard for another RHS that can play similar minutes (15-18 mins). A guy like O'Byrne out of Colorado would help make the pairings a bit more balanced. But that's really the only tweak I'd make on defense.

On forward, I think this is dead on. We definitely need another top-six scoring winger, and the fact we need a #3 centre is crystal clear. Unfortunate about Manny's situation because we all thought we wouldn't really have to worry about that for the life of his contract.

Perry at 6 mil is a pipe dream.

So that leaves one spot, and pushing Kassian to the 4th line, to find that 3rd LWer some ice.

It also ensures the 3C position will be a "budget" fill next year.
All valid points. I was previously also operating under the assumption that Schroeder would be the 3C full-time going into next year, eliminating the need to spend big on that position. But with the way things have transpired recently... I just don't know if that's a possibility given the way he was used.

I have serious doubts that we get Perry unless we throw at least 7.5 at him, seeing Getzlaf's contract he may be looking for the same. I definitively dont want to throw 8+ at anyone not named Crosby, Malkin, or Stamkos.

Don't forget Tanev who has evolved into a fine bottom pair right-side Dman, but I agree maybe another right handed guy or at least a defenceman who's used to playing the right side if he's a lefty. That's another reason Ehrhoff was such a good fit on this roster.

The way casual Kev was playing this season, I'm not so sure about that one either.

Lol what? I'm talking about this offseason, and how 6 million might be better allocated on an elite level player, instead of two mediocre players.

Having a bad day today or something?

Why get a player that he won't like?
I think this is the least biased summary I have read of Coach Vee's style.

I agree wholeheartedly with you though, there's no point in getting a player, superstar or otherwise, with the expectation that the game plan changes with their influence. It won't. We need to focus on players that can play within our existing system as long as we have Vignault as the head coach.

Someone fast that can pass well and has a playmakers mentality...preferrably on the wing.

Someone that can move the puck, skate, and play the right side on the blueline...preferrably right handed.

Brooks speculated yesterday that the Hawks may buy him out in the off-season. I think it's absolutely insane, but if it happens then I'd jump all over that.

Hmmm Cory Perry walks form a team likely offering him 8m per, to hit UFA, and so he takes what to sign here?

Hossa shouldn't even be talked about. A buyout for him is _extremely_ premature. So much so that I don't think it warrants any discussion. Edit: And I see you're running with it...

So, again, who is this elite forwards that we are sending exactly Higgins+Raymond for?

Pominville would be my ideal impact top-6 forward to add. Under-the radar, on a good contract, and an impact player on both sides of the ice. Did he ever play with Kesler for team USA? Might have some chemistry from there as well.

Would probably have to include a 1st to get him, but would be worth it imo.

Hmmm just got a TSN trade center notification on my phone that said Kassian has been dealt to Ottawa for a 6th round pick. Heart skipped a beat until I realized it was Matt Kassian. Yikes.

Jason Pomminville would be a dream on the 2nd line.

1st + Booth?
