Terrible management by the Flames. Iginla now is forced to stay for the year and there goes another couple assets.

colorado likely could've fetched more than a 1st and a 3rd in a trade, especially as i like the flames chances (even before the trade) of challenging for a playoff spot and therefore the 1st may not even be a lottery pick

if colorado doesn't match, calgary will overpay o'reilly just over $1 million per year but second-line centers like him are highly valued anyways and you'd rather overpay a young player trending towards becoming an excellent player than an older ufa that's trending downwards...also this will force calgary to make some salary cap decisions that they've been putting off for years

really like this move for the flames and just another in a string of poor management decisions for the avalanche

Money.
He obviously wanted to get at least a $5 mil average salary.
Canucks didn't offer him that much.

Easy answer. In Van he'd be the #3 centre in Calgary he's #1

He can also walk into a 1st line center position on the Flames.

Calgary media/fans are just looking to validate their idiotic move.

Gillis probably offered RoR 4 mil over 4 years, something along those lines, probably as a passive favour to the 'Lanche.

Meanwhile the Flames walk in and offer the guy a ridiculous amount.

"We did good bacuz da Bancoover Canuuks did the chame ting wight?" - Calgary Flame fans all over Alberta.

Just saw the intermission where Milbury ripped into Ovechkin. I have to say, I loved every second of it.

I would match if I'm the Avs. What if ROR helps the Flames make the playoffs and you end up picking 17th overall. Is that really worth it? Not in my books. ROR is an elite second line center who may be a bit overpaid but you can manage a bad cap hit for a couple seasons and then reevaluate. Odds of finding a better center than him at 17th are low. There is already enough youth there, do you want to get into a never ending rebuild?

Only way letting him walk is the smart move is if you think the Flames are finishing bottom 5. I don't see it myself.

In a position to succeed. Iginla is still an offensive force (or will be, when he starts to find the back of the net), and having a really strong defensive forward with him would be ideal. Iginla, ROR, Tanguay would be a good first line.

Why? Just more Milbury BS narrative/posturing. It's embarrassing. I hate hockey media so much.

It seems like a Gillis move to offer sheet him but I'll believe this over the calgary source.
David Pagnotta ‏@TheFourthPeriod

Seeing your questions... Told from very reliable source CGY's offer sheet was the only one he received.

Kesler is injured for 4-6 weeks not the year. I don't think ROR wants to even be in competition with Kesler. He's guaranteed 1 st line minute sin Calgary, while he'd be in competition for a top 6 role with the Canucks.

Yeah, the more I think about it the numbers don't make sense for the Canucks offer sheeting O'Reilly, especially next year unless they planned on trading Kesler or something.

Calgary's first 12 games in March:

Van, SJS , ANA, LAK, LAK, DET, NAS, DAL, NAS, CLB, STL, CHI

That's an incredibly tough schedule, with the only "should" win in there being Columbus.

Other than that, wow, I could see them going on a crazy losing streak, O'Reilly or not.

Especially given that they're 2-6-3 against the top 8 teams in the Western Conference in terms of points % so far.

Sharks and Predators are playing abysmal hockey right now, St. Louis is still scuffling some, and Detroit isn't exactly lighting the world on fire either.

Nope. There's no way our offer was even close. It would destroy the salary structure of the team.
