Ugh, makes you glad, if you don't really need any top D. That class went downhill fast when Edler re-signed. A lot of fading guys and some decent #4/5 options.

I'll be pretty disgusted if Snow doesn't get Streit signed. Newsday reports he wants to stay and is asking for 3 yrs/$10m.

Some NYI fans don't want to give him 3 yrs, they feel his play has dropped off. But, he's playing injured, playing on a leg that needs rest to heal.

Personally, I'd love the Avs to get either Smid or Streit (dependent on what they sign for). The rest of the class doesn't look all that great though.

Well I don't actually expect this thread to stick around too terribly long, so I'll leave it alone for now.

Besides, you never know, they might change their minds...

Personally, I'd like Detroit to take a shot at Babchuk if they're not planning on re-signing White.

I mean in the sense that he is likely going to retire. He is having trouble keeping up now and he'll be 40 next year.

Smid should be resigned. He Loves Edmonton, Oilers need him, and have cap space.

Smid is solid. How has white looked this year?

Not bad, but not great. Decidedly average.

He'd been a healthy scratch for 7 games for whatever reason (nobody seems to be able to figure out Babcock's reasoning this season), and wasn't bad in the game against Columbus this weekend (+1; was pretty invisible other than a miscue with Kindl early in the game).

Smid will be the most desirable, a desperate bottom feeder would likely overpay him if he doesn't stay in Edmonton.

Looks like Smid is the top UFA dman out there. What would teams offer him I wonder?

Hmmm. Sounds like he's on the decline, would he take a short term deal for a similar cap hit to what he's making now

I wanted the Flyers to get Streit until I read your post. The Flyers already have an old, injured defenseman signed up at $6 million for next year.

I wouldn't say "decline" as much as I would "back to normal," since he played with Lidstrom last season, though his numbers weren't that much higher than in years past: in the 7 prior years he's been in the league, he hasn't hit 25 points or more only twice.

He'll be 29 in June (man, he seems a LOT older than that), so he'll probably be looking for a 4+ year deal for $3m-$3.5m; it's likely Holland would do that if he doesn't package him in a deal for something else.

With his size and hitting abilities, the Doug Murray sweepstake will not last very long.

It's actually a decent list, what is horrible about it is majority of defensemen's age is in the mid-to-late 30s.

smid will probably definitely get paid. he seems like the best UFA d-man out there if you factor in age and everything.
the ducks could definitely use him. he could be a great d-man to play alongside fowler

Sadly (I always liked Crankshaft) I think he's close to being done right now.

Streit is rumored to be working on an extension with the Isles - 3 years - $10M.

The fan base is mixed on whether to re-sign him or let him go. Considering the Isles have one of the worst defense corps in the league, I don't see how they could just let him walk.

If the Isles continue to stink it up by the deadline, Streit could definitely be shopped. Visnovsky should definitely be on the trade block since I can't see him playing in the NHL past this season... he is the perfect deadline rental for a contending team.

With Komisarek being bought out/traded before next season being a foregone conclusion, Carlyle's desire for big, physical stay at home d-men and age being a factor. I think these guys could potentially interest the Leafs.

Ladislav Smid, Ryan O'Byrne, Mark Fistric
