Makes sense, good solid grinding winger. He's a 4th liner on a good team, but he's showing he can be a pretty good/useful one. For two years (and cheap), I like it. Good for him.

He's earned this contract. But we all know the reason why he was re-signed....

As long as he's on the fourth line going forward. Otherwise..

I find this very, very interesting.

He totally deserves the contract, and I like how he has played — so its fine... I like it very much.

Nino, Sundstrom, Persson and Nelson all will get long looks for the 2013-14 campaign.

Already have Tavares, Moulson, Grabner, Okposo, Neilsen, Martin under contract for the season.
Now add McDonald. That is 7.
I am assuming (and I realize its an assumption) that Josh Bailey will be given a QO at the very least.

That is 8 guys, and if you add the other 4, that rounds you out to 12 forwards.

Again, I am assuming Boyes, Boulton, Joensuu, Aucoin and Reasoner will not be back.

This has Ullstrom on the outside looking in as he too will be RFA.

I am not counting Cizikas as he will be on his ELC, and can be sent to BP as needed, although he too is a safe bet to remain...

So it is a bit of a log jam... and this does not include Strome, or any possible UFAs.

Now of course I am speculating on those 4 forwards.... and one could speculate Anders Lee will get a look. So it is shaping up in an interesting way.

I think if I can infer anything from your post, it's that they won't be going after any UFA's this summer.

Trades TRADES?!? What is a trade?

No problems with signing McDonald, he is a solid 4th line guy. He plays that role very well.

Just to many roster spots committed for next season with a mediocre group. We need to TRADE at least 2 of Bailey, Okposo, and Nielson and try to upgrade the top 6 and top 4. Obviously it would take more than just dealing those 3. I won't be holding my breath waiting for Garth to do anything, he is allergic to trading and UFAs.

Don't hate it but I'm not crazy about it either.. He's a solid fourth liner.

I am happy for him. I don't see a huge logjam up front yet as the only 2 forwards they will bring up next season are Strome and Nino, if Nino isn't part of a trade in the summer. The club has an explicit need for physical depth so this is a good signing.

But seriously, they need a guy who can play as physically as Colin AND produce points as well.

McDonald has played well, but why is snow in such a rush to sign him to a two year extension? Why not one? I can't imagine a rush for other teams to grab Colin in the offseason. Why not just wait and see if a better option presents itself in the offseason?

Strait is another guy who has played well but there are so may dmen in the system what's the rush to get him signed?

McDonald has been good so far this season hopefully he continues his good play.

If UFA can by any means include waiver wire castaways who didn't make their respective teams in camp, I disagree.

Hes a fourth liner. How much of an upgrade can you make for 4th liner with 10pts in 24 games and good forechecks?

MacDonald plays hard and has been a solid 4th liner but we seem to be recycling AHL caliber talent on our bottom two lines every year. I think MacDonald has become a journeyman NHLer who plays hard and earns his minutes but we really need to start upgrading this roster and stop fooling ourselves

Was a little leery about him earlier this season...but he has definitely grown on me. He has worked hard and is a very useful 4th liner.

Good for him! Nothin wrong with solid, especially considering a lot of us here probably had never heard of him before this season.

I liked the guy from the very beginning and always thought he was a perfect 4th liner.

Snow has traded for Smyth years ago, he didn't forget. Better than Milbury who would have traded Matt Moulson and Matt Martin for John Erksine a second time. Maybe it's better he doesn't trade all the time. Now is the time and all these cheap contracts point to something big....
Agreed with everything you said except Franz is pretty putrid at the dot. He is 43.3 this year. 45.2 last year.
