WBC are real-life trolls, seeking attention and making their money from ensuing lawsuits. Nevar forgit that.

Which is why trolling them with a rainbow house is incredibly amusing.

They're sitting in their little building grinning ear to ear that they're getting more publicity and didn't even have to do anything.

I'd take that trade. Giving them more time in the news in exchange for making them rage every time they pass the house on their way to the fortress of evil is worth it.

Yeah, that's the thing - I'm not sure if they really care as much as they let on.

Regardless, yeah. That guy is awesome for doing it. I just hope they're not getting off on the publicity it generated.

Speaking of WBC. I saw an interview/talk with the lead lady-troll, whatever her name is, a while back.

It seems she's more intelligent than the "character" she portrays and their motives are not always completely nebulous. She talked about the desire to ensure freedom of speech for everyone, no matter how hurtful or offensive the speech is.

Wish I could find the video clip...

You can have it if you want. Although I'm not being replaced, so there's that small logistical hurdle. :p

I respect someone like Paul Cambria, who may not agree with the ideas of the clients he represents, but he will defend their right to say those ideas. With the WBC, I can't reconcile someone who says the things they say, and tries to tell me they're only saying that to prove a free speech point.

If you REALLY wanted to defense free speech, you'd just shut up and collect billable hours on behalf of others, not say those things yourself. The WBC is litigious only because it suits their need for attention and has a tangential financial benefit.

I'm not suggesting proving a free speech point is their own motive. Just that there's more to them than pure hate mongers, even if hate mongering is what they do really really ****ing well.

I can get behind that.

I'm fairly convinced that there is a level of intelligence in there. Although I know a couple lawyers who might be an exception, generally hard to get a JD and pass a bar exam being a mouthbreathing dummy.

Personally, I think they bring up the free speech angle as a deflection to make their hate mongering somehow more palatable. (Just an opinion; I grew up with some pretty racist folks that seemed proud of things they would say, but tried to mute it at the same time.)

Probably.

But the video showed showed a much more honest discussion of what they do as opposed to taking the defensive and claiming free speech after-the-fact.

Still looking for that damn video.

In an interesting twist of fate, my ex-boss, who jumped ship to head back to college in the South is now over there. Doing what she was doing here, just there. I'm not sure I want to go there....

The article itself says that. From the owner of the house:

Quote:
"They own the majority of the homes in the community, and I walk through the area every day, and I see them running in between each other's houses," he said. "One day I was walking, and Shirley Phelps [one of Westboro's main spokespeople and the daughter of the church's leader, Fred Phelps] was on her four-wheeler. And I said, 'Hey guys, how are you?' And [she and her husband] responded, 'Oh, we're good. How are you?' We had a short conversation, and she was extremely nice, and she made a joke and we all laughed."

"It's the craziest thing -- and it really throws you off -- because she's the type of woman who calls you "hun" and "darling" -- she's very Southern," he said. "It's like, aren't you the lady that's supposed to be casting me into hell? It's truly mind-boggling, but I can't say anything personally bad about her because she was kind to me and she made me laugh. She'd probably be fun to hang out with."
Just goes to show...people are people, and even if they have some crazy views, they're not Adolf Hitler all the time.

Do I get credit for invoking Godwin's Law?
