Oilers' best line post 1995

So, which is it? The premier Oilers' scoring line of the early 2000's, the kids of today, the best 3rd line in the NHL in the early 2000's or the Stanley Cup line of 2006?

It's really hard to argue against Smyth-Weight-Guerin, but the kids certainly have the potential to be better.

I agree on both counts. The Smyth-Weight-Guerin line had it all. They could have been dynamite for so many years if we had the money to keep them. And they had Dougie Weight, my favourite Oiler of all time since I started following the Oil.

Smyth Weight Guerin were one of the best in the league.

One of the top 10 lines in the league quite easily.

Weight-Guerin we're pretty good together but Smyth was still pretty young and didn't produce much. Who was Weight playing with in his 100 pt season mainly? Wasn't it Ciger?

The year after that when Weight put up 82 pts he was playing with Smytty and Kovalenko I think.

Smyth-Weight-Guerin never really produced huge numbers as a line. Still better than any of the other lines the Oilers have put together since then though.

Have Hall-RNH-Eberle actually excelled as a line together before?

If anyone wants an example as to why the pre-2005 NHL sucked, the Weight-Smyth-Guerin line is a good example.

The Oilers are winning, that line is one of the tops in the league, and we trade Guerin because he'd be too expensive after the season.

Fair point, but they certainly have the potential to be world beaters is they learn each other's game. I included them for that reason.

Smyth-Comrie-Carter should be there before Moreau-Marchant-Grier, but there had better not be any votes that aren't Smyth-Weight-Guerin.

OK, this was a landslide. Pretty much as expected. I thought of including Smyth-Comrie-Carter, but decided against it as three Smyth-lines seemed too much. And I really loved the MGM-line.

It's easily the Smyth-Weight-Guerin line, only line I'd say that is close was the Smyth-Horcoff-Hemsky line of 2005-06.

I'll say this for Moreau - Marchant - Grier, they may not have been as high scoring, but they were plenty dominant in their role.

I was a bit young at the time, but if IIRC Guerin was traded because he was too expensive during the season. The EIG had serious cash flow problems at the time. Could be wrong though.

They were awesome in their role. Crash, bang, speed and awareness. Almost a guarantee to keep the other team's top line at bay.

i think the vast majority of people are going to agree with this post... the weight line was the best we've had since the dynasty years, and it's not really that close either (as the current results of the poll would indicate)... weight is the best center we've had since messier

the kid line of 4-93-14 certainly does have the potential to be better, possibly a LOT better... but as of right now, they aren't

The more I think about I might change my vote to 94-10-83

Smyth:
75-36-30-66

$corecoff:
79-22-51-73

Hemsky:
81-19-58-77

I think they produced more offense as a line that season then 94-39-9 did in their best season. But we need to take into account it was the year after the lockout and offense was inflated.

They still followed it up with nice numbers though before Smyth got traded and Horcoff ruined his shoulder:

Smyth:
53-31-22-53 (on pace for 50 goals)

$corecoff:
80-16-35-51

Hemsky:
64-13-40-53

Even after Smyth left Horcoff and Hemsky put up good numbers...

Horcs had 50 pts in 53 games and Hemsky had 71 pts in 74 games.

I think they're being underrated in this poll. As I said earlier Weights best season was with Ciger.

It's got to be either

Smyth - Weight - Guerin

or

Smyth - Horcoff - Hemsky.

Smyth Weight Guerin. That line was THE best line in the league for the 2 months it lasted. They were so good management knew we couldnt afford them so they traded Guerin in hopes they could at least afford to keep weight and avoid him getting 100 pts. They ended up having to trade Weight to STL in the off season for immediate comp rather than allow a offersheet. Even with Weight taking a 2 mill cut in pay from the offer sheet the team would have been badly in the red. Weight era done

MGM-- I dont know if i can remember the stats properly but the first year they were together i think they all hit 20g. pretty solid 3rd line for the clutch era. Before Grier blew his shoulder and it popped out every third game.

OT---Anyone remember Smyth holding out/injury to start the the 99-00 season and selivanov taking the top LW position to the tune of 16 goals in the first 11 games? It pays to be on weights line.

Also OT --I liked Ciger. He had a great shot and i dont remember him being a soft Euro.

Thank god for those ads... i always wondered where i could get a female catheter.

No love for Glencross/Brodziak/Stortini? That line alone nearly willed us into the playoffs in '08.

The MMG line shouldn't be up there. It's comparing apples to oranges.

soooo, its a bad thing that I was the only one who voted MGM? Hey, they didnt score a ton of goals, but I remember them being so good at shutting down other teams best lines and causing trouble. For me, just as important as the top line. *shrug*

Gotta go with S-W-G... but if the Kids don't turn out better than that line then Tambo has epically failed.

you should make this a post-dynasty best Oilers line. The one I remember as the best after most of the hall of famers had left was what I believed was called the Pipe Line of Damphousse - Nicholls - Murphy

If Damphousse wasn't having marital issues and requested a trade at the end of the season (from what I can remember I think that is why he was traded or left), that line could have been more special than the 1 season they got together
