NHL Realignment Announced - not good for the Canes -- UPDATED

Amending what I had before based on the memo that just went out to NHL teams today

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division
Carolina
Columbus
New Jersey
NY Islanders
NY Rangers
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Washington

Central
Boston
Buffalo
Detroit
Florida
Montreal
Ottawa
Tampa Bay
Toronto

Western Conference

Mid-West
Chicago
Colorado
Dallas
Minnesota
Nashville
St. Louis
Winnipeg
-

Pacific
Anaheim
Calgary
Edmonton
Los Angeles
Phoenix
San Jose
Vancouver
-

Top 3 teams from each division make it into the playoffs each year, and there are 2 Wild Card spots to the top 2 finishers in each Conference outside of those 6.

So in other words, if the Canes finish 4th, they are not going to the playoffs if the 4th and 5th place teams in the Central, who play in a MUCH easier division mind you, have a better record.

Oh, and its a divisional playoff til you get to the Final Four, where the 4 seeds in each conference will be settled by the Wild Card... So, once you already put up with this hell of a division in the regular season, you've still got to face 2 playoffs teams in it during the playoffs just to get the right to play anyone else.

Seems totally fair.

I really hope the NHLPA puts its boot down again. I really, really hate the 4 unbalanced divisions and screw the current playoffs idea. Regardless of how the teams are aligned.

Anything other than the Southeast Division, as it is currently constituted, is bad for the Canes.

Anyway, this is a long way from being finalized. The NHL needs to figure out where Phoenix will be based, and they really want to go to 32 teams. I'll believe it when I see it.

Yep. Hate the 4 conference setup. Keep it the way it is until you expand. Don't unnecessarily screw 2 conferences over by putting an extra team in.

Dunno why they don't do something simple like this....

Keep current setup

Winnipeg to the Central (Not ideal for them, but much pref. to SE, and frees up Detroit to move East)
Detroit to the North East
Buffalo or Boston to the Atlantic
NJ to the SE.

That's assuming the whole "Detroit must move East" thing is true.

if not, replace Detroit with Columbus or Nashville.

Yeah apparently the NHL and NHLPA already settled on this as they designed jointly...

The Canes just got hosed... Big time

I don't like the 4-conference idea in that is in inherently unbalanced, but I don't think it's necessarily bad for the team either. Other than Pittsburgh, there's not a team in there right now that the Canes aren't at least an even match for.

Dislike the unbalanced system and dislike what amounts to divisional playoffs.

Like I said in another thread, the best/easiest thing to do would be a four-move realignment that would make all but two divisions wholly within a single time zone and would put those other two in two time zones. Winnipeg moves from the Southeast to the Northwest. Vancouver moves from the Northwest to the Pacific, Dallas moves from the Pacific to the Central, and then Columbus moves from the Central to the Southeast.

I hate the idea of unbalanced divisions.

On the other hand, I really like divisional playoffs and our schedule will be fantastic from a marquee POV. The organization will make a whole lot more money and get a whole lot more attention in this setup than in the Southeast.

Well the thing is, there's more to it than just geography and time-zones. They're also trying to consider other things like travel costs, TV ratings and such.

That's my biggest objection. I really don't want divisional playoffs- while those matchups can be fun, the more random matchups are interesting, and match up better to a team's talent- weak teams will go deep in the playoffs because they come out of a weak division, and teams that should get a chance to make a deep run won't because they get jammed in against another great team year after year.

The playoffs are perfect as they are. Divisional playoffs would alter a lot of dynamics, and IMO, for the worse.

Whether we like it or not, JR and PK love it. It fills the sched with teams that will fill the building more regularly. Maybe with money we will spend more. As it sits the division is two teams at the floor and 6 teams spending to the cap.

Yep..and having two 7 team conferences just screams for expansion by 2 teams.

Hate to a be a"traditionalist", but this league is watered down enough.

If Phoenix moves, it will probably be to Seattle. Then 2 expansion teams, one in Quebec City and one in Toronto.

If Phoenix stays, I think we see Seattle and one of Quebec City/Toronto.

Oh good point... I forgot how much desire there is for another team in Canada.

Right now I'd like to think Quebec City will get one before Toronto, but apparently there is already the infrastructure in Toronto to bring in a second team.

Quebec City has a NHL ready rink, they just need a team.

I would hate for Phoenix to lose its team (thinking about moving there).

1. NHL expands to Charlotte.
2. Charlotte claims Chad LaRose in the expansion draft.
3. Steal NC State's ad campaign of "This is OUR State!"
4. ????
5. Profit.

I won't abandon hope yet. The Isles are hopeless, we generally make the Devils our *****, we play ok against the Rangers and the Caps, and Columbus is Columbus.

No need to freak out yet.

That's really the only hope this team has in the future. More attendance (even from visiting fans) + More exposure on TV (since we'll be playing the Atlantic, essentially). Both of which lead to more merchandise sells.

So maybe in a year or two, we can start spending to the cap. Of course, that may all be negated if we miss the playoffs for those 2 years.

And with it, the influx of money (~$250m x 2 / 30 = $16m per team) from expansion fees. Teams like Toronto and Philly tip their doorman $16m, but that kind of cash would make a huge difference to this organization's bottom line in the short term, and potentially in the long term if the money is invested intelligently.

Do we really worry about the team's future as in staying in North Carolina? They have a long lease and it's not like they've last in attendance very often.. Even last year I was impressed with the attendance.

Yes, it will be difficult in this conference but I don't think it would kill the franchise.
