Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter

After an unfortunately short-lived run that never had the amount of viewers it deserved, Veronica Mars is a show whose fans have been clamoring for a movie. It's hard for a studio to justify shelling out the cash to make a feature film of a TV show that didn't find it's full audience in its run (Serenity would be the exception here).

After 5 years off the air, show creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell have launched a Kickstarter page to finally get the movie made. Their goal? 2 million dollars, which is apparently the largest film Kickstarter to date.

As I post this, they are nearing 1 million dollars on their first day! With 30 days remaining, who knows how high their funding could get!

What does this mean for the future of movie making? There are plenty of TV shows that have left people wanting a movie, like Deadwood, or another Rob Thomas created show, Party Down. Obviously Arrested Development was the big one, but they're already getting their movie.

Amazing how much it's generated on it's first day. Kudos to them!

Liked the series, but I have serious doubts that they'd be able to create a half-decent film with so little money, especially considering the time-frame they outline on the page.

Well, if the cast is dedicated enough to take reduced salaries, it's not the type of movie that would cost a ton to make. In fact, Kristen Bell is the only person in that cast who is a big enough star to command a decent salary, and she's one of the main people pushing for it to happen (I wouldn't be surprised if she waived her salary).

Yeah, the time-frame isn't ideal, but lets keep in mind that most of these people, including the writer/creator, have made a living in television, where time isn't a luxury that you really have. I think it'll be alright. Especially since I'm pretty sure Rob Thomas has been planning for this for quite some time.

Do these things close once they hit the mark or keep going? Its going to hit two million in like an hour.

It won't close for 30 more days, regardless of how much money it brings in. Who knows how much they'll end up getting. Obviously it's not going to continue at this pace the entire time, but we'll have to see what kind of dough it can pull in.

I do too. Especially because I backed it at the level where I'd get a physical copy...

Since your a backer I think you'll get a dvd copy even if it doesn't see a wide dvd release . WB does have a manufacture on demand site so even if it ends up there I'm cool with getting it that way.

it would be awesome to see Dick and Logan be uncensored but they'll never let that happen. Although they did slip "the shocker" in uncensored in season 2

While I have not backed the film, I do think she is very attractive to say the least. Never really watched that show so don't know all that much about it.

Crazy how fast it met and acceded the goal.

Also if it does well, it could very well be picked up for sequels in the future and they would make good money there.

Also it helps when expensive things like advertising etc is being picked up by a studio.

The goal was to raise $2 million in 30 days. Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has agreed to put the movie into production and pick up the tab for marketing, promotion, and distribution. But exhibiting a passion that broke Kickstarter records in just six hours, fans have been flocking to the site since the page went up at 7:30 a.m. PT. And even though the goal has been reached, pledges can keep coming in.

Best of luck to them in this. That show was such a good one and shouldn't have cancelled as quick as it was.

I think I got as far as the end of Season 2. I really enjoyed the show, I should go back and watch it again. Would definitely go to the movie.
