It's a real toss up for every team not named the Ducks or Hawks.

Nucks, Blues and Wings could easily be out. Oilers, Daallas and Jackets could be in.

A 4 game winning streak or losing streak and it completley changes.

And because of this, the Flames will refuse to make any big roster changes.

You look at a team like the Wings that sucks this year and yet you look at the standings and they're fourth in the whole West conference. I guess there's a whole lot more teams that suck outthere.

nucks are nowhere near Anaheim Ducks or Chicago Blackhawks in standings.

Ohh yeah! I LOVE those two teams. No-one else is even close! YEAHH!!!

Conference chest thumpers are worse than SEC homers in college football. Pretty much only fans of low intellect chest thump about their conference and how superior it is. Whatever makes people feel good about themselves though.

Example Pitt / Chicago , all their success they have was a product of sucking. Boston / LA/ Pitt / Chicago were cellar dwellers 5-6 years ago.
Are you trying to tell me teams didn't get up when the Avs came to town back when? When Detroit came to town the home team didn't sell out?

I'll make it simple , If the league is better/healthy now than before ,why is the NHL not on ESPN anymore. The NHL would run early and late games on ESPN and ESPN2 in the playoffs in America. I get why some people might like it better , but is it really?
Because Comcast (NBC/Versus) outbid them? When US broadcasting rights were up for bids back in 2011, there were 4 broadcasters bidding on them - Versus, ESPN, Turner Broadcasting, and FOX. Comcast won the rights with a record deal of $2-billion over 10 years. That $200-million per year is almost double what ESPN used to pay for broadcasting rights.

These kinds of threads are creepy and mildly sectarian in nature.
There are good teams and bad teams in both conferences and anything else is just unsubstantiated opinions.
There are no metrics that quantifies objectively things like "better", " softer" , "weaker" . Especially in a year without Cross conference play, both shouldn't be compared at all until the finals.

How to you quantify soft?

Less physical? 4 of the top 5 teams in hits are in the East - Toronto, Philadelphia, NY Rangers, and Ottawa. It even extends to 6 of the top 10, and 11 of the top 15. (source)

Don't block as many shots? The top 10 is an even 5/5 split, and the top 15 is a 8/7 split in favour of the East. (source)

Not as many fights? 3 of the top 5 teams, and 6 of the top 10 teams in fights are in the East. (source)

There's plenty of tough, physical play in the east. There just also happens to be a lot of open "pond hockey" style play.

These "Western Conference is amazing and better than the East" threads are the new Crosby threads.

Like I told my friend who's a Blackhawks fan, I have no problem saying they are the best team in the West - but in a season without interconference play, I refuse to call any team the "best in the league". That'll be decided in the Stanley Cup finals.

The Wings are in seventh in the West and are the only team to have played 27 games, every team in the conference has a game or two in hand on them.

Whoa what's up with Phoenix's huge difference between home and away hits? Are the stats guys in Phoenix really generous with hits or something or are they just way more physical at home?

Exactly. Who really cares about which conference is "better"? I see no need to even argue it.

everyone sure loves those matchups between the blue jackets and predators where not a single forward you'd want to see on an NHL first line steps on the ice.

If you want to go with the NBA/NFL comparisons fine... for the east, add "spectacular and skill", for the west add "no ones gives a **** about it except once a year".

Except.... thats not what I said. At all.

I said its insanely tight, and I wondered if it had happened before this far into the season.

Yeah I know but that's what these threads always turn into, a pissing match between West vs. East trying to claim superiority.
