You are reminding me of a great "what if" though. What if the 2005 CBA didn't change the free agency rules? The Devils went into the 2004-05 lockout with Scott Niedermayer a restricted free agent still owing the team several more years... the new CBA turned him into an unrestricted free agent.
I totally forgot about that.

Intriguing.....

Thanks for the correction. I was very young then and the 2003 cup run and the lockout blended together in my mind without the intervening season.

The RFA/UFA thing with Nieds is fascinating though...I'm still bitter over that. I bet we would have won one more cup with him...

- What if there was no lockout in '04-'05 and Selanne never got that chance to heal his knees?

- What if Giguere could have stolen just one more game for the Mighty Ducks in '03 and won the Cup in Game 7?

- What if we got to pick Sidney Crosby at #1 instead of Bobby Ryan at #2?

- What if in '09 we scored the game winner in the final minutes of Game 7 instead of the Red Wings?

- WHAT IF DISNEY NEVER MADE THE MIGHTY DUCKS MOVIES?

I'll only go for recent memory:

5b. What if Cherepanov didn't die?
5a. What if we drafted Giroux instead of Sanguinetti?
4. What if we resigned Jagr?
3. What if we drafted Brown, Seabrook, Parise, Getzlaf, Burns, Kesler, Richards or Perry instead of Jessiman?
2. What if Drury doesn't tie game 5 in 2007?
1. What if Henrique didn't score in OT?

HM: What if we don't sign Redden, Drury and/or Gomez?

Whether NJ wins another Cup with Niedermayer or not, I'm pretty sure Anaheim doesn't win their Cup if the free agency rules didn't change.

Hell, a great what-if for Anaheim is what if they didn't acquire Rob Niedermayer?

For the Canucks:

5. What if Bure was happy in Vancouver?
4. What if the Bertuzzi incident never happened?
3. What if Luc Bourdon had not died?
2. What if Hodgson didn't have problems with management?
1. What if the Canucks didn't play like **** in game 7 of the finals?

For the Blue Jackets...

5. What if we'd ever won a draft lottery at, like, any point ever in our history, instead of getting bumped down half the time?

4. What if Mike Keenan hadn't been a complete blathering idiot in 2002 and hadn't gone for the swap of 1sts that got us Rick Nash?

3. What if that ****ing linesman hadn't called that ridiculous Too Many Men penalty in game 4?

2. What if Doug MacLean had actually listened to anyone or anything other than his own towering ego?

1. What if Mr. Mac hadn't given Bettman his personal guarantee that the arena would be built after the levy failed? (For that matter, what if the levy had passed and we'd gotten the Whalers instead?)

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
