I hope he doesn't leave..it's always great to watch him.

Lidstrom was also different because as long as he played they were Cup contenders. Holland would always convince Lids to return.

I'd say the Wings are a level below the contenders now.

Even with his Selkes he's still likely not a HoFer.

This was a joke post right?

Datsyuk is a clear hall of famer if he retired tomorrow.

Clear hall of famer? He's borderline at best. Outside of the selkes he has no major personal accomplishments.

You must have a miniscule hof in your world with those standards. Meanwhile in reality he's a clear hofer.

I think when the people who actually vote on it, it will be an easy decision. Maybe not first ballot, but he get's in and it's not really a question.

Is that the official criteria now? I didn't know.

Someone please inform Adam Oates that he isn't allowed in the HOF anymore

lol @ suggesting Datsyuk won't be a HOFer.

It's Datsyuk. The judges will each receive a phone call late at night, and be asked the one word question, "Datsyuk?" to which they will respond, "Yes." and he will be a HOFer.

Would be a shame to see him go, especially with the realignment coming. It would be great to see him more often, even though he'd probably dismantle the Kostkas and Holzers of the Leafs.

All you needed to do was watch his 800 games played to know he's a hall of famer.

Datsyuk Finishes
Goals:
Assists: 2, 5, 8, 9
Points: 4, 4

0x 1st AS, 1x 2nd AS

Oates Finishes
Goals:
Assists: 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7
Points: 3, 3, 3, 8, 10

0x 1st AS, 2x 2nd AS

Offensively, Oates demolishes Datsyuk. Playmaking wise they're in separate ballparks. Is Datsyuk's defensive play that strong to bridge the gap? Hardly.

3 Selkes is huge, but Datsyuk will likely not make it in if he retired next year. The 1000 point marker is likely going to be the make or break point for him. More accomplished players than Datsyuk aren't in the Hall.

Edit: A good indicator will be if Rod Brind'Amour makes it. Both are known for their defensive play (besides Lehtinen they're the only multi Selke winners since Federov) and have similar point finishes.

Lehtinen is basically equal to Datsyuk defensively (rep wise, not so much, but both have 3 Selkes) and Lehtinen isn't whispering the HoF. Granted, Datsyuk was much better offensively.

This post is 100% proof positive that Datsyuk is underappreciated on HF.

I get your point, but I think what most of us are saying is by the voters themselves, he's going to get in regardless of point totals at this point.

No. Just proof that there are still people out there who think points is the only benchmark for greatness, which just shows how little they actually understand about hockey.

Zubov and Fedorov finished their careers in the KHL. It would have been nice to see them stay in the NHL for a little while longer, but it was understandable that they wanted to retire in their home country and experience playing for their fans at home.

Agreed, but we should all be able to make some inferences about his intentions based on contract status. If he's staying he will almost surely not play out this contract until the end.

Also, regarding Sanders' age vs Datsyuk's age...comparing a football running back to hockey player I'd say the ages line up pretty evenly. 30 for a running back is definitely old'ish and 36 for a hockey player is also getting to the point in his life/career where he asks himself how much longer he can/wants to play.

Basically, this. There's a lot more to hockey than racking up points.

He's in as soon as the call to the hall is made. He's one of the best players of his generation and is consistently in the conversation for best ALL-AROUND player in the league year after year.

He's in, no question.

Not at all. He thought about it after his contract was up in 1999 or 2000, that's it. There was never a threat or a hint that he would go back after that.
