For the sake of NHL hockey fans, I hope Detroit gets him a good linemate to end his career or at least ships him to a contender at the trade deadline in 14 so he can make one last run. I'd hate to see his last 100 games playing with no talent and a floater.

Had Zubie in mind as I read this thread.

Of course, Zubov was already 39 by the time he returned home, and only played one year for SKA before hanging up his skates for good.

Datsyuk's only 34, still got a ways to go I would think. But, hey, his life, his career. If he wants to finish back in Russia, more power to him.

I'm really surprised no one else saw/remembered this and linked it. Here is an article from right after Russia won the World Championship last year.

You can't fault him ONE BIT if he wants to go back home for his daughter. His daughter is the #1 thing in his life with probably Detroit being #2. You can speculate all you want and say "He's going to get this or He's staying for this". Coming from someone that loves him and the team...he isn't staying here and it's time to embrace it. You can be sad about him leaving but for the reason he wants to leave...at some point you have to smile.
Aw what a little cutie!

Can't blame a man for wanting to be closer to his family, especially after he's given so much to his team and fans around the league. Wherever he goes, I wish Datsyuk the best of luck.

If Datsyuk does go home, I see a bidding war emerging in the KHL for his services...can't fault him at all for wanting to see his daughter grow up. Sometimes, the lure of returning home is too great (in the past, in Datsyuk's place, you could put in Hakan Loob or Aleksey Morozov - Morozov returned to the KHL during the 2004-05 lockout and has played for only one KHL team since - the Kazan Snow Leopards (Ak Bars Kazan), and he captained the Russian team at the 2010 Olympics, and Loob left for home after having scored 195 points in his final two NHL seasons and winning the Stanley Cup - at the age of 29, returning to Farjestad.

I could see Datsyuk playing 5 or 6 more seasons in the KHL.

He stated it long before and always. Nothing new there. It's just with the situation in Detroit now it's more obvious than ever that after the contract runs out he'd be tempted to go.

There won't be much of a bidding war. There are 3 options at the very most. And as money is the last thing Datsyuk will consider it will come to down to his plain preference of team and city.

I'm watching this game, and I just can't blame the guy. Dats is trying to do everything himself because no one else is willing or capable. For the love of god, give him a winger or let him go to Russia.

Yeah I agree 100%. I can't be mad, I'll certainly be depressed :/. His talent has been completely wasted the past few years in my opinion. Also he has wanted a fellow Russian on the team for quite some time and I guess that's to much to ask for. I hope he stays but I'd understand him leaving to play at home.

I won't believe it until I see it. There were rumors about Liidstrom for 8 or 9 years and he retired a wing but wings were always contenders during Lidstrom's career. That could be a different factor. Not sure if the wings will put together a contender before Dats starts exiting his prime.

Rumor squashing:

"Obviously, I've heard the rumors," Holland told NHL.com. "I have not had any real conversation with him or his agent, Gary Greenstein. Gary lives in California and I just saw him the other day. Basically we're going to sit down at the conclusion of this season, before Pav goes home. I don't know what will come out of it. We'll talk before he goes home sometime in June, but anything beyond that is speculation and rumors. Nobody's told me anything. They haven't told me they're staying or going. I haven't asked either. We hope he wants to stay, but I'm certainly aware there's a professional league in Russia and they pay their players well. Beyond that, I don't know."

“It's not 100 percent, but I hope we agree and sign more,'' Datsyuk said. “I'm looking forward (to signing with the Red Wings). I would love to stay. (Media) asked me and just I answered it's fun to be home (in Russia). But one home to come to another home. When you play too much here, it's nice to come back home (to Russia).

“I hope so we agree and I sign new deal.''

I'm both glad, since Datsyuk is an amazing player, and sad, because he's in our new division.

Still, can't be selfish. Glad he's (probably) sticking around.

Datsyuk would still like to finish his career in Russia. He doesn't know how much longer he will play in the NHL

I'll take Pasha's word over Riger's:

He's 34 and got a later start in the NHL, that and his style of play means he still has a ton of hockey left in him. I expect 3-4 year extension (around 7.5-8 per) then a few years in the KHL.

Edit: Damn too slow.

As it has been repeatedly stated, never believe reports that come out of Russia. Those reporters make Eklund look like Bob McKenzie.

Just want to reiterate that both statements were made and are not mutually exclusive. He wants to sign an extension in Detroit (for an extra 1,2,3,4,5,6 years... who knows?) and then plans on going over to Russia to finish out his career. That could be when he's 37 or 47 for all we know

Datsyuk could probably play in Russia until his mid 40s... Lower caliber of talent, his game is built off skill, which isn't really lost with age (Although you do lose other qualities) and to date he's really never had a major injury.

I am pretty sure his wrists will never be the same, has some permanent damage there.

I'd be pissed if Datsyuk left the year he was coming into the Bruins' division. I know he will likely kill us, but he's an awesome player and I want to see him 5 times a year.
