Great news I think he takes a home town discount to stay here myself.

I don't get how Smid can block so many shots and not miss a game this season... Are his legs made of steel???

Agreed. The Oilers need Smid (hey that rhymes) and it really sounds like he wants to stay.

I hope he stays too. He fills a big spot on our current blue line. Now if we can get two more vets who are actually good, we should be much better.

Regarding numbers on Smid. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like $3.5M x 4 years. Believe sides are close enough to find a way.

I'm hearing four years, $16-million ball park for Smid. Could be done soon. #Oilers

Slight overpay if true.... Want him below 3.8

ill take it no problem.

frankly im suprised he'd settle for 4 years. 4M is an easy price to pay at that term. easily worth it.

With all of these tweets starting to roll in I think it's fair to say, that we can expect an announcement of his signing anytime now.

I'm guessing within a couple hours today.

Edit: besides, "Tracy" just said that Garfield says he's signing for 4 years so it's gotta be true ;P

It's not worth losing him over a few hundred thousand though.

I'm not saying I wouldn't sign him at 4M, I just would be more comfortable if we didn't break 4M.

$4M contract is like the death kneel for defensive defenseman.

Send a message via ICQ to Wheathead
Smid would get 4.5-5 on the open market. 4M per is a good deal.

The only reasonable explanation is that if he gets his face cut up, he's going to look like this

3.5 for 5 is where I could aim...
4 mil is too much. Take some money off the table for a longer term.

Someone has to give a bit in their contract. It seems we pay top dollar for EVERYONE.

I'm not thrilled to hear his AAV will likely be 4M. Hasn't Stauffer been saying he'd expect him to come in around 3.5M? Usually a salary that large indicates a D-man who can chip in offensively, which Smid rarely does.

That said, Smid is integral to the D-core, would likely get 4M+ on the open market this offseason, and we have no one ready to step in for him. Lock him up!

4 million for Smid is not top dollar. 5 million+ is top dollar. Even if he signs for 4, he's left money on the table in order to stay here

4M cap hit for 4 years = perfect, anything under that and I'm ecstatic.

That's what Zbynek Michalek's contract is and they are very comparable.

4 mil is high right now for a defensive defenseman... With the way the market goes, that will probably be a bargain in the last two years.

Smid is young enough that I don't expect him to start getting banged up too bad until the end of that term.

4 mill is too much for a 3-5 guy. I am hoping for 3.

Sadly with the UFA crop this year 4mil is leaving 1m+ off the table for Smid and im sure thats why it has taken to the last week to do.

$4M for 4 years or $3.5M for 5.

Hopefully he takes the extra year for a little less cash. Also allows him to show that he wants to stay an Oiler.

No chance they get him for $3M.
