Smid is straight ahead awesomeness. Sign the man!

5x3.5 is a hell of a deal for a player of Smid's quality. Defensive D-men can't be undervalued, and this would be exactly the kind of deal that the team needs in order to be able to keep all the other young talent locked up.

Sign it Tamblowe, sign it now.

His agent can be as furious as he wants, the player makes the choice of where he wants to play and what he is comfortable taking.

Wow, if 3.5 for 5 years is all he wants--Tambellini should not nickel and dime. Smid will be worth every penny of that for the next 5 years. He's 27, not 32. I would not mind, if they go for a 6 year contract.

I'm sure it's down to years vs. AAV at this point. Hope Sam is as willing to take fair value for the sake of having a competitive team.

If Smid is looking for 3.5 for 5 years, it's idiotic that it has taken this long. Get. This. Done. Now. Tambo.

Sign it already Tambo, 5x3.5 is absolutely fair if not an underpayment.

Yes, DO nickel and dime. He's staying, it's not a Smyth negotiation, that 0.5M/year may buy a critical upgrade down the road.

I would say sign him for 3 or 4, 5 is too long imo.

Look at volchenkov. when things fall off the rails for stay at home D, it gets ugly fast. They take a lot of punishment and it catches up to him. Smid blocks a lot of shots, so 5 is too rich for me. But I would do it if there is no other way since he cannot be replaced on the open market with this year's crop of free agents. Heck, we might have two of the top UFA's in Whitney and Smid on D.

Not sure if I agree that Smid is a 4 mil d-man.

I like his battle and compete, but his puck movement is horrendous. Skilled players pick him apart in his own zone/neutral zone when he tries to move the puck up ice. Yes he does battle hard but he struggles to make intelligent plays after we obtain possession in the own zone.

If Ville Leino is a 5M man long term on free agency day, then Smid can easily command just as much.

I have no doubt Smid can get 5 M in July. The problem is a team with Smid at 5 M might never win a cup.

Bingo! Smid is a good solid defenceman. Definitely not a #1 guy anywhere.

I really don't understand NHL owners. They go through a lockout to get cost certainty, then Wong agrees to the $4.75M a year extension for Viznovsky.

With a $64M cap next year $3.5M a year for Smid should have been a reasonable deal.

With the Viznovksy deal $4m a year for Smid is a slight underpayment.

I have no problem with 5years for Smid. Just because one stay at home slowed down in his early 30s doesn't mean it is the norm. Many stay at homes have productive years in their 30s.

Conventional wisdom is that 75% of your salary should go to the 12 players that constitute your core (7 forwards, 4D, 1G). That's 50 million, or an average of 4M per player.

I'd think the appropriate value for Smid would be $3.5ish, but with UFA years being what they are, I'd rather overpay him at $4M than lose him.

This contract will be a barometer for the phase we're in to me. We need to get away from the "every contract is an over payment" phase we've been in for what seems like forever now. Smid is a guy who wants to be here and should be willing to shave a little off the top and take a nice fair contract to stay. And even though he's a great guy, we need to send the message that Edmonton is now a place where you give up a little bit of money for the opportunity to play on a great team and take a shot at a cup within the next 5 years. That includes Smid. Nobody gets overpaid anymore. Eberle was the last.

I'm putting par at $4M/season up to 5 years... If they pay less than that, then we're entering a phase that will enable us to win. More than that and we're still overpaying and it's a bad sign.

That's far and I agree with you 100%, sort of a "statement" contract.

Sounds like a 4 year deal that people on twitter are reporting. My guess is 4 years 3.75m per.

Yeah this seems very reasonable given what he would get on the market. Good deal for both sides.

Man, I maybe overstated at $4M/year... it's crazy that Smid has given a quote like this ahead of signing his contract extension:

Quote:
“I’d like a five years, around that term. Yeah five years at $3.5 million (a season), that would be nice. I’d be more than happy with that. Obviously you look around and see what other guys are making,” said Smid, who has played 443 Oiler games since coming here along with Joffrey Lupul and draft picks in the Chris Pronger trade with Anaheim in 2007.
3.5M for 5 years should have been done already. At this point, if it's $4M/4 years someone has really screwed the pooch.

The Vis deal has absolutely nothing to do with Smid's. Vis is a legit top pairing guy with all around ability. Smid isn't worth near what Vis is.

Same here, which I'm alright with, Smid isn't an elite defenceman but he's solid and reliable which is enough for me.
