I think the majority of Oilers fans hope he is resigned at around $3M-3.5M per year for 3-4 years. A soldier, battles hard, blocks shots, solid #4 guy. Just can't move the puck very well or create offense.

Wouldn't surprise me if he is traded for magic beans...perpetual rebuild go!

Before the season, Smid was expected to resign. Not sure why it's taking so long. He's a key piece, they won't move him unless it's part of a trade to upgrade the defence or the negotiations aren't going well.

Has there been any indication that the two sides are even talking or making some kind of progress at all?

The Oilers braintrust is pretty tight lipped about everything. So we think they are, but we don'tknow.

I tried looking for some stuff on this topic online but to little to no avail so I thought I may as well ask you guys since I'm sure its a highly discussed topic in Edmonton right now with the deadline approaching

Anyway thanks in advance
Edmonton likes to make a whole to fill a whole, I expect them to again deal him for a Tom Gilbert type defenseman who will likely be traded next season for a Ladi Smid type defenseman.

I believe the Sportsnet color guys from the St. Louis game did mention that the Oilers and Smid's agent have had serious talks.

I hope this is true. The guy is a warrior.

I was actually shocked to read that before tonight's game Smid was leading the league in blocked shots. (He is now tied for second with 90 blocked shots, which is still darn impressive).

He's also 18th in hits, which is valuable to a soft team like the Oilers.

On a side note, Nick Schultz is 10th in blocked shots! Oilers defense have two of the top 10 in blocked shots??? Well I guess if we give up that many scoring opportunities they are bound to have a lot blocked haha.

Its almost trade deadline day i'm really hoping tambo and smid's agent are having discussion and come to an agreement on wednesday I will become pretty worried if there is no deal within a week
Smid knows he will get more $ on the open market but i always thought he liked edmonton. Losing him would cause a massive void

Gilbert was up there too. Likely still is. I like Smid a lot. 3-3.5 is the going rate. He has a great attitude and plays with passion. Keep him please.

On the flip side, if he is asking for 4..... Trade him for another defender. Not kidding.

I agree. All signs where pointing to this. He stays if his demands are in line or goes if they are not or they can upgrade on him, but I really like this kid.

Smid wouldn't get any more than 2M on an perrenial cup contenders. Isn't that what we want to be?

$2 M? Matt Greene is making $3.25 M next season, which is when Smid's new contract begins. Smid is better player than Greene, but the Kings aren't perennial cup contenders. What Smid comparable on a perennial cup contender were you thinking of who makes $2 M? Just curious.

I am not going over 3.5mil max. My understanding is that Smid wants 3.5mil and EDM wants 3mil. Cut it in the middle and sign him.

If Smid isn't signed by Tuesday...I'm going to be very worried.

I would go as high as 4M on him to be honest, he's our best D-man. I'd ideally want something around 3.5-3.75

3-3.5 may be wishing for too little, if that happens then we hit the jackpot here. Smid is the best UFA D-man out there, he could get 4.5 on the market.

I'd easily give him 3.5 but every penny over that would sting. He's probably asking for 4, because based on the current market he could easily ask for that. At 3.6 or so I think everyone should be happy enough to bite the bullet - but who knows? His agent wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't try to get us paying the big bucks. I pray they can compromise.

Up to Lubo getting extended I thought $3.5M was top end on Smid.

Now, maybe $4M is what the market will give him.

Why exactly was there a lockout? No way Lubo should have gotten as much as he did with the cap going down. Foolish owners can't help themselves.

Edler-3.25
Letang-3.5
Murray-2.5
Seidenberg-3.25
Jackman-3.167

All players that are better, in fact, all but Murray are twice as good. See they get the puck out of their end BEFORE they have to try and block the puck with their teeth.

Murray is much worse than Smid at this point, and NONE of the other dmen have contracts that are indicative of their calibre. All of them will be getting major raises

Can't play a lick of offense. Plays hurt. $3-3.25 is fair.

Dan Hamhuis - 4.5M
Zbynek Michalek - $4M
Tim Gleason - $4M
Josh Gorges - $3.9M
Willie Mitchell - $3.5M (badly underpaid)
Henrik Tallinder - $3.375M

Given the comps and how much they're making on their UFA contracts - I think Smid goes for anywhere between $3.7-4.0M
