Public opinion around the league was one of surprise that he had fallen so far. If Whitney continues his resurgence there will be GM's who attribute his start to the year as lockout/injury recovery related and probably still value him highly. It's just a matter of whether any of those GM's have a big enough need for a Whitney that you get a proposal that's worth moving him. Otherwise I'm not opposed to a 1-2 year deal at $2.5mil/year. He probably deserves more like $2mil/year but the Oilers can't afford to let him go for free.

It probably comes down to whether Whitney wants to be here and is willing to re-sign, if not you've gotta move him at the deadline if the Oilers are out of the playoff picture. I cringe at the thought of Tambo overpaying him or letting him go for free.

In Vancouver:

Dave Nonis,"Hey Steve, you should dust up on your asset management."

Tambellini,"Haha, okay will do Dave."

Walks away....

Tambellini to self,"Oh that Nonis. Ass Hat management....not falling for that one."

I agree with all the other posts that say "Trade Him".

He has brought his value up so now is the time to trade him. For what he would get for a salary, they could find a better spot to use it. He won't be the Whitney he used to be and his time with the Oilers is over.

TRADE . . PLEASE !!!!!

This is what I was thinking till I had a look at this years ufa class. It's looking really weak. Might have to keep him around for another year. If he won't extend for one year at about the same or lower cap hit might be forced to get rid of him.

I would offer him one more year at about the same money. We need to see what we have here.

He was really our best player just 2 seasons ago before the injuries and surgery started. The guy is bouncing back, so we need to give him the time he needs. No sense giving up on a 6'4" defenceman who has the game to put up 40 to 50 points if he continues to recover. The guy just turned 30.

Re-signing Whitney for one year is a much better gamble than re-signing a 38 year old Ryan Smyth.

^ This! You package him in a deal to get a better D man coming back if possible, or some more help for the bottom 6 (maybe in a package with Belanger?)

I picked keep him, because I don't think we'll get great value. I'd rather hold on to him than trade him for spare parts. If we can package him for a great player obviously, but I don't see it happening.

Well, it depends how well he plays up to the trade deadline, and how close we are to the playoffs on April 3rd.

I don't think he'll resign here anyway unless its overpayment. He'll probably go back out East, maybe Boston.

Short answer no. Long answer no. He's done in Edmonton. Injuries, poor play, no consistency, questionable attitude (at least IMO)...

I'd rather trade him. But if all we're going to get is a 7th rounder back we can resign him.

We wont get a better d-man coming back. Teams dont trade away better d-men at the deadline if they are buyers.

Anyone who wants to be rid of him have to realize that the options are to:

1. Sign one of these players, and think about how much they are going to want (remember, if they are good d-men, there will be a bidding war).

2. Go in with our current group minus Whitney (remember, injuries will hit at some point, so take out any random 2 or 3 other d-men at some point of the season and think about which rookies will be playing over their head).

3. Trade for a d-man (remember that a trade usually leaves a hole somewher else. So trading Gagner or Hemsky, our 2 most popular trade baits, will be trading away our 2 top goal scorers).

4. Hope that a great d-man falls in our lap (hey, it happened last year...)

Eventually, and unfortunately, he will hurt his foot again. Congenital deformation doesn't go away. Trade him while he looks good.

Well we've paid him something like 15 million dollars to play 125 games, so if he wants to sign for 2 million I don't mind. If he feels entitled to any more from us, he can go be a janitor at MIT.

With that list it's very tempting to sign him but that foots going to act up again and were all just going to be mad at him again. He can be someone else's problem.

If he keeps playing this well why can't we just trade him for a 3rd pairing dman and a 2nd or 3rd rounder? I'd be very happy knowing that we don't need to worry about his work ethic dropping down to questionable at any given time like Smyth's has once again.

Just because he's been scoring, it doesn't take away how much of a pylon he can be defensively.

Now's the time to trade him, can't see him coming back for half of what he is making now. Eventually this team will have to worry about the cap and hopefully they can sign Smid.

I would say i am surprised he is still an Oiler, considering he spent more lock-out time slandering the NHL brass via twitter than actually getting ready to earn the 4 mill he gets paid thanks to the league. Personally i think he lacks priorities and vision and is a whiner...

I would punt him and his bad attitude as far as humanly possible.

But then again ive never liked whiners. Some people do.

----------------------

My prediction of what happened a few weeks ago --
Kreuger "we cant you a job anywhere else because YOU SUCK and everyone knows how big of a whiner you are because you play with social media. you have a big yap that should be stapled shut for self-preservation. try shutting up."
Whitney " Ok ill try harder " *shrug* "But you guys should cater to me more...im handicapped. This league is working against me."
Kreuger "shut up or we waive you and you will forever be known as worthlessly waived"
Whitney "ok. fine. i hate the nhl. let me eat my pretzel"

Does better to get out of town.

Oilers focus on Smid and Fistric as should be.

Still undecided right now. If we can acquire a better defenseman than let him go.
