Last year, the Rangers were great because they had a lot of skill (Richards, Gaborik, Hagelin, Stepan, Callahan, Kreider in the playoffs) plus a really solid supporting cast and a great D.

Going from Prust, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Fedeotenko, Brian Boyle and even John Mitchell who was good - to Pyatt, Halpern, Asham, Haley, Brian Boyle 2013, and Powe - that is a HUGE dropoff.

The Rangers gained 2 skilled forwards in Nash and Miller, along with the skill they already had. So they have a ton of skill but its surrounded by a complete scrap heap. Literally nothing good happens unless those skilled guys are on the ice, and Richards and Gabby have been disappointing.

So since they have an abundance of skill, I think unloaded one of those skilled players (Gaborik) to somehow improve 2-3 of the supporting cast slots makes sense. I do think they could use another d man as well.

The Rangers had a huge drop off in depth forwards. Therefore, we should trade Gaborik for Fedor Tyutin. I like it.

And 3.5 million in cap space. Then you can make another deal and fit in a forward with a $4-5 million cap hit.

But the above was in response to why Umberger is the type of player that the Rangers could use

Okay, so you think that subtracting Gaborik and adding Umberger somehow improves the offense?

"If they could figure out how to make the cap work, Umberger would fit the type of forward the Rangers are looking for, obviously not in a Gabby deal though"

that is literally what my post says on the previous page.

Umberger just simply isn't the right player for us right now.

Nonetheless. Your logic is that we get 3.5M in cap space. Please provide an example of a player making that money who would be an upgrade over Gaborik and could realistically be acquired.

my post said "there is no upgrade of Gaborik" just the ability to add 2-3 players that would provide better overall roster balance.

Chris Stewart makes 3 million, and he's a guy who could be realistically acquired. He is not better than Gaborik, but Stewart + a solid defensman and maybe another piece overall improves the roster depth

The Rangers are 7th in the NHL in GA/G. The Rangers are 23rd in the NHL in G/G. Thus, you feel the Rangers would be best served by adding defensive defenseman who would be fourth on the depth chart and inferior goal scoring forward, and some other plug. Is that your point? Or are you going to move the goalposts again?

Chris Stewart has 11 goals and 14 assists this year. That's more than Gaborik. He is also a bigger, more physical type of player.

Fedor Tyutin has a goal and 13 assists so far this year. Michael Del Zotto has 8. Marc Staal has 9. Dan Girardi has 8. McD has 8.

So the "defensive defensiveman" has more points than any current Rangers defesmen, and he is playing with forwards with 1/100th of the skill the Ranger forwards have

If Gaborik is traded to CBJ, I'd ask for the following.

Artem Anisimov/Nick Foligno
David Savard/Tim Erixon/John Moore
2013 NYR/LAK First

Agreed, and Tyutin is still getting better.

Gaborik is a redundant piece that the Rangers can't use effectively in their lineup this season, every shift he plays with Boyle lessens his value. He could be a great fit for a team making a serious run at the finals and he still a very good player, but nobody to really build around

The original poster appears again with his Rangers-Columbus proposals. Last year it was Nash and how Columbus needed all of these pieces to complete the trade with the Rangers. Too much term left on Tyutin's contract. Umberger too. No thank you.

Seems close to fair.

I can't see Gaborik bringing home the moon with the way he has played and his contract.

If Gaborik isn't a fit with the Rangers, who try to run a very up-tempo heavy forechecking system, how in G-d's name would he be a fit with the Jackets, who do the exact same thing and just traded for Rangers quality depth to implement it?

I am thinking this is not a good concept.

Yet, you wound up taking less in the summer than what was offered in February.

And those (Feb proposals) were the proposals that you deemed to be bad.

interesting.

Wasn't the Feb proposal Dubinsky + Christian Thomas + Erixon + 2012 1st? If it was, then AA over CT and the projected upgrade on the first makes it a worthwhile wait.
