Bergeron for Selke Again?

I know there's a lot of subjectivity that goes along with this award, but Bergeron has been having such an incredible season (even better than last year) that I find it tough to not see him as the front-runner right now. I know a lot of people don't consider him the favorite based on that poll that was just recently conducted here (Toews had the most votes), so I'm just curious to see the arguments against him.

He's not a player that can be effectively evaluated by stats, but just for reference, some of his numbers are pretty incredible this year. He's just a shade under 62% in the circle, he's been on the ice for 5 total goals against (with a very low 5-on-5 offensive zone start percentage of 45.4%), and 0 goals against when he's on the PK, despite being the Bruins most relied upon forward for the PK.

Most of Canada and the metro-Chicago area says Toews. Just because of his name though when in actuality, Bergeron's been the best defensive forward. People see system and assume he's a product of it.

And that's not a slight against Toews, I watch alot of Hawks and he's been great. Still would give it to Bergeron though

If Mikko Koivu stays healthy this year he has got to finally get the Selke. He is playing at close to a PPG pace yet is incredibly responsible in the D-zone. Best penalty killer on the team.

This Habs fan watches a ton of Bruins hockey, and yes, Bergy is the favorite again this year. As consistent as they come.

Bergeron is the best defensive forward in the NHL right now, according to almost every metric. If he keeps it up, he's going to win it again.

Not saying that there hasn't been a number of years where he should have been, but has Koivu even been nominated for the Selke before? For such a reputation award, you almost have to lose out on a few defensive years before you win it.

I could see any of Bergeron, Toews or Datsyuk being in contention.

It could go to Bergeron, but I think Im in the minority of CHI fans that think Hossa should get it over Toews. Toews has obviously been great, and he's the only guy on the team that can be relied upon to consistently win key draws, but Hossa has been kind of a madman defensively this year.... can take the puck away seemingly at will and once he has it, he protects the puck so well... he's just so key for Chicago's puck possession style.

CHI is lucky to have both

Agreed that Koivu is the only person who should really be challenging him for it this year.

Backes has not been very great at it this year, Sobotka is the only player I'd mention in this sense.

It's a two horse race between Bergeron and Toews though I'd probably lean towards Bergeron right now.

He's the next great defensive forward. He stands a chance of being the best defensive Canadian forward since Clarke.

I think he is as valuable as any forward out there, save Crosby.

Bergeron is incredibly underrated. I would put him in the top 10 centres in the league at this point.

and the Bruins haven't let in a SH goal while Bergeron has been on the ice all season.

Selke is as reputational as any award these days.

Having won it before is a huge bonus.

A newcomer has to demonstrate some pretty spectacular defence to compete.

We might as well face the truth: Mikko Koivu will never win the Selke. It's a reputation award. If the Wild starts to be successful from year to year, he may get attention and be nominated some day. There have already been a couple of seasons when he should've been nominated, but wasn't, which is hardly surprising.

The no PK goals against still baffles me. Bergeron is just so good, yet not flashy. Quite the player to be a fan of.

Yeah, a 3 on 5 seems so safe when he's on the ice. Stress level always goes up when Kelly replace him, and Kelly's a pretty good defensive player. Bergeron's just that good.
