Slower than Andrew Brunette.

Still a very useful second-line player.

Sure, he isn't worth his contract but I am not going say he's "done".
I agree with you. His incredible shot is why he has those numbers. His shot is still amazing. He just lost his speed, he is so slow. I don't know what happened to him. You'd think the signings of Parise and Suter would have motivated him. I don't know if it's lack of fitness or lack of desire though. He still has a great shot, though, which is why this is a frustrating situation.

Him asking for a trade was a blessing in disguise for the Senators!

I still think he'd look good in a Pens jersey.

Heatley need not worry. If it all goes teats up for him in Minnesota, Holland will overpay him to to help prevent Wings youngsters from playing.

It's probably a lack of desire leading to a lack of fitness. Even in his time with the Sens he never had the will to win you expect from a player. Once he got his contract I think his desire to win and improve started to wane, even with his pretty decent seasons in SJ.

As a Sens fan, I'm pretty impartial towards him. I don't like him or hate him. I'm just glad he left town before his decline.

What happens when you're not nearly as fast as the team needs you to be.

All the talk about him not being in shape is pure BS - it was reported that he worked out last summer and fall rehabbing the knee, and put on extra muscle on his upper body.

Karma sucks, doesn't it, Dany? This is what happens when you screw off on three teams in the span of a few years.

But seriously, he was probably spending time getting his knee to 100% and couldn't get his legs at the appropriate level. I don't think he's done, but he definitely needs to work on his leg strength in the offseason.

I was going to post this. Instead of being all butt hurt shouldn't Ottawa fans be happy he asked for a trade. He saved you from having to complain about his contract and lack of production.

That projects to 25 goals and 15 assist for a full season. That is obviously terrible for a guy with a $7.5m cap hit.

i don't know if it's been said, but a decent chunk of the reasoning behind trading Havlat for him was the fact that he has one less year on his contract, and we aren't actually paying him $7.5 per year.

Healthier
Better Shot
Fewer years left on commitment.

who the hell cares if he's terrible for $7.5m? we didn't sign the contract, which is better than what we traded away.

He is definitely trending down.

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nhl/pl...y-heatley/#PPG

Since 2006, he has only had one season in which his points per game increased. So far this year, he is at a career low of 0.5 PPG.

Granlund has some spectacular skills but he is not even close to being an NHL calibre player right now.

His most common linemate at 5v5 was Devin Setoguchi (148mins). When those two were on the ice together, Minnesota took 38.2% of the shot attempts. When Setoguchi was away from Granlund, Minnesota took 52.7% of the shot attempts.

The picture is just as ugly with anyone else on the roster; he's in the mid-30s with almost everyone, and every player did better when Granlund wasn't on the ice with them.

Uh, what?

From the start of the '08 season until the end of last year, only 9 players piled up assists faster than Mikko Koivu.

He's ahead of Kopitar, Spezza, Eric Staal, Toews, Lecavalier...

I don't think that assists/game means a whole lot, but when someone is 10th in the world at it over an extended sample size, it's probably a clue that he's a pretty good center for a goal scoring winger to play with.

People are worried about goals and assists but those are results and what you have to focus on is the process.

Here's Heatley's shots per game with each team he played for:

Atlanta, 190 games, 2.83 shots/game
Ottawa, 317 games, 3.44 shots/game
San Jose, 162 games, 3.07 shots/game
Minnesota, 108 games, 2.75 shots/game

Clearly as a rookie it takes some time to learn how to generate shots at the NHL level, and you can see a pretty clear curve peaking in Ottawa and slowly dropping the past 4 seasons... but most alarming to me is this year so far:

Minnesota this year only, 26 games, 2.27 shots/game

Not only is his shots per game super low compared to his career average and arc, but here are his most common linemates at 5v5:

1) Parise, 189 minutes
2) Koivu, 187 minutes

...and on defense...

3) Suter, 178 minutes
4) Brodin, 124 minutes

When you spend a majority of your ice time with elite players, and you still manage to hit a career low, you're in bad shape.

It's also worth noting that Heatley was an absolute anchor on those guys, dragging them down pretty significantly.

Heatley with Parise: 51.6%
Heatley without Parise: 40.2%
Parise without Heatley: 56.9%

Heatley with Koivu: 52.0%
Heatley without Koivu: 40.1%
Koivu without Heatley: 54.7%

Has nothing to do with conditioning. And I'm not even saying he's being lazy. He is simply not as quick as the Wild need for him to remain on the top 2 lines. He slows down Koivu-Parise and ultimately it either left those two to bang into the boards until he finally caught up, or we lost possession and it came back down. He isn't playing on the 2nd line because it is just simply the fastest line we have. Seto and Zucker compliment eachother way too much to ever split that group up. So when Jason does come back, his 2nd line spot is firmly in his grasp until he screws up. So you have him on the 3rd line where it is a bit slower and he can still go down and score. Sucks for him. But that is the nature of the game. Last year he was our saving grace in the goal column. Now we finally have diverse scoring across 4 lines.

Remember Andrew Brunette? Good hands and smarts still work, and that's more or less Heatley's niche.

To answer the original question, no, not done like Cheechoo or Gomez done.

Top line scorer, well probably not any more.

Depth line scorer, yes.

Hell, he IS 2nd on the team in goals and tied with Gooch for second in power-play goals.

For an offensively challenged team, that's nothing to sneeze at.
