This boards view on elite talent is ridiculous. They would rather pray for a goalie performance of a lifetime then get an all world talent.

Here's the thing many people don't seem to realize. I'll have to find the article later, but this is what it pretty much showed.

Teams that spend 45%-55% (I believe those were the numbers) of their cap on five of their players were MUCH more successful than teams that did not. It was something crazy like 15/16 teams that made the playoffs met that criteria, and the most teams that didn't were on the outside looking in.

GM's look for the talent first and worry about the cap situation later. There's always going to be cap floor teams that will take on a contract at the end of a players career.

I mean, it's not like this team could have used an elite sniper tonight on the final PP. It's not just Ovechkin, but just elite goal scorers and playmakers in general.

Edit: Here's the article that shows the teams that spend about 44%+ of their cap on five players. It's from 2010, but the point still stands.

The Washington Capitals: Proving that all you need to win is a good powerplay.

Take note Ward. Step it up you bum.

Their PP is just ridiculous, and it's really starting to heat up. There is a lot of puck movement on their PP, and they aren't afraid to shoot the puck.

However, they have some of the best PP personnel in the NHL which obviously makes it extremely deadly.

Did anyone see GOATvechkin's second goal yesterday?.

Toews makes a bad pass into Oduya's skates and the Preds tie the game. So, do you think Toews gets demoted to the 3rd line now?

Saw the goal. It was kind of strange to me.

Kuba looked like he was in outter space while Ovechkin just went right round him.

Regardless, great shot, great goal.

His cap hit is too big though!.

He definitely could have had another hat-trick tonight if Bishop didn't make a vey nice save on him near the left post.

No team will want to play the Capitals in the playoffs, assuming they make it.

I hope he wins the Rocket Richard, and I think there's a chance he takes the Art Ross with the way he and the rest of the Capitals have been playing lately..............

Lou,

Honestly? If the Caps played in a real division there would be no digging out of that hole they created for themselves early.

Also, they have a good team and were under-performing. If the B's had played as poorly as WAS for most of the season, I can only imagine the chaos that would have ensued on this board.

It's so true

Parise, Kovalchuk, Perry, Ryan, Nash are just some of the names I can think of that have been available or rumored available at times and the pushback on this board was crazy.

I don't get why talent is a bad thing...not every player has to be a selke nominee and not every prospect is going to be gretzky.

Would love this team to have a difference maker player like one of the ones listed.

Ryder scored but we needed the cap room to sign Bourque, Pandolfo and call up McDermid for 2 fights then keep him because of waivers then trade him.

I won't mention the guy after Ryder actually.

Should we just change the thread title to what's going on with Ovechkin because it's been taken over with nothing but Ovie love for some reason.

I wanted Kovy big time when he was on the move. I think he's certainly the best of the players you listed.

The one player you listed that I really did not want was Nash, but that's because I don't think he's a piece you can build around, but he's a very good complimentary piece.

At the end of the day, talent is more important than cap space. You can almost always fix your cap problems, but it's much harder to fix your talent problems.

There weren't really any other good games on today, and with the lack of scoring the Bruins have been demonstrating, when you see a player like him tearing it up, it's hard not to think about how this Bruins team could use a pure scorer.

I am thrilled that Ovechkin is proving me wrong. I like watching super-talented hockey players play hockey.

Never questioned is talent, just his desire.

Me too, the way he`s played recently reminds me of the old Ovi, for about a year and a half, maybe two, I was with you Mike, the guy looked like there was 1000 places he`d rather be than the rink.

I credit Oates with some of this too, perhaps he`s brought an attitude and a coaching style that has allowed or encouraged Ovi to just play his game?

3 coaches in less than 2 years couldn`t have helped either

me to- very happy to see him back....Michael Ryder getting a lot of love on the Habs board. He'll retire with more than 300 NHL goals.

Give it time, and they will be bit**ing about him making paper airplanes in the press box again. Probably the only fan base whackier than Boston's
