How would this change the Caps?

If in the 2006 draft, Chicago drafted Backstrom 3rd and let the Caps get Toews? Would they be in the same position with or no? Post your opinions.

I don't think they would've been as good as they were at their peak due to Toews being less offensively-oriented than Backstrom, but I think their success would be more sustainable due to Toews bringing a ton of stability

I feel this sums it up pretty well. In addition to that, I think Chicago would have still won the Cup in 2010. I think someone else would have for sure won the Conn Smythe but I think Backstrom would have helped give them enough offense (like they didn't have enough depth) to win the Cup.

But he is MILES ahead in mostly everything else. He can probably help with this slump.

I highly, highly doubt it would make much of a difference.

The shift key, maybe capslock if I'm feeling feisty.

I'm not sure if he's miles ahead in every other area.

I don't think Caps would do much better if at all. They still would have gotten Halak'd in '10.

Ovi wouldn't be captain and probably wouldn't have as much pressure and would still be scoring 60 goals a season. Caps would had been on top of the NHL longer, Blackhawks would probably be the same as where there are today.

That's what I was thinking.

I don't think it changes that much.

Capitals would still be where they are now...but might have gone slightly further in the playoffs say last year.

That Hawks team probably still wins a cup

I think it would be worse. Toews is a natural leader but with Ovi the chemistry would be terrible

I'd rather have Backstrom anyway. The problem isn't Backstrom. He's the best player on the team. He has 19 assists playing most of the year with Wolski/Fehr and Brouwer. He's also the teams best defensive player and is 1st unit PP and PK. The problem is weak defense, weak goaltending, injuries (so far), and no consistent scoring depth.
