He still has value. If the Avs are real lucky they might get a second round pick for him. I think he will most likely fetch a 3rd round pick or equivalent young player/prospect.

Doesn't mean he will perform the same under a new system. It's up to the GM/scouts to determine that. He has enough skill that he might garner some interest.

Leopold looked the same In Buffalo and look what he got, the same goes for Murray who was a complete liability every time he played for the Sharks. Desperation does wierd things to the minds of NHL GMs.

With Murray and Leopold I've upgraded my outlook for O'Byrne's return. A 2nd rounder will be nice.

I doubt O'Byrne will yield anything of real value. Fair or not, Leopold and Murray are still running on reputation as impact players. Sherman could argue that O'Byrne is comparable, but given the nightmare season he's had and his limited utility even when he playing well, I just don't see any GM giving up something decent for the guy. My prediction is that O'Byrne stays put and quietly (slowly) walks away at season's end.

Murray doesn't offer up anything more then Obyrne, maybe a harder hitter, but he hasn't done that much in the last 2 years.

Both guys are comparable and should net a similar return. Murray is more experienced and played his role longer, but he also comes at a bigger cap hit then Obyrne. Obyrne is a cheap addition to a bottom pairing that when he plays to his capabilities, is just as good if not better then Murray has been lately.

Obyrne should be able to fetch a 2nd if Murray fetched 2 2nds.

If we traded Obyrne + 3rd, we might even be able to get a 1st from a team like Boston or someone who is likely to make their respective conference finals.

I think Hunwick could be a good pick up for a team that needs more mobility and some depth. I bet the Avs wouldn't deal him though.

No that isn't sarcasm.

This is our best hope, IMO. Murray is better defensively than O'Byrne, and Leopold is better offensively. So, I'd expect them to bring more.

If the Avs get a 3rd round pick for O'Byrne, I'll be satisfied.

O'Byrne has been better the last two games. He's been much more aggressive keeping the puck in the offensive zone. Hopefully that'll get scouts convinced he could help as a #5-6 guy.

He's been better of late. He remembered he's allowed to hit people.

LOL. I thought Wens meant 'when?' with a typo. Good stuff.

Anyway, should be an interesting few days.

Kobasew has played well too. Solid on the PK and skating very hard. Would be a great pickup for a team with bottom six problems.

They should accumulate as many 2nd's as possible, then package them together and trade up to the mid-late 1st and take Nichushkin.

If he's there, maybe. Otherwise we're probably better off using them all ourselves.

Haha, well obviously.

The Avs should be looking for 2nds anyway though. They're great in that round.

It really doesn't cost much to get a late 1st. A 2nd and a 4th or 5th. That's all. Depending when, a mid first isn't that much more. Maybe 2 2nds or a 2nd and 3rd.

That's not true. It's very expensive to trade up in the first round. A second rounder might move you up 4-6 spots. So it would take 20th overall + a 2nd rounder to move to 15. Also, it pretty much always takes a late first + something to move up in the first round.

History of moving up from 2001-2011.

Generally it's almost never worth it to trade up unless you are completely crazy about a guy.

I have a hunch we'll see a changing in dynamics with the aggregated draft this coming offseason. Instead of having to wait overnight to get 'your guy' he may be available at 31-33 for you to trade down to without risk someone does their homework overnight and finds out who you want.

Just a hunch, but otherwise I agree with your post. Two 2nds got the Sens Puempel in the late 1st, the 2nds got Detroit Jurco and Ouellet. Guess who won that?

I'm fine with our second rounders, STastny, O'Reilly etc.
