Kichton is 20, and the average age for juniors is closer to 18, not 16. Drafted as an overager or not, you can't ignore what Kichton has done. He has consistently put up the numbers for three years now, and is at the top of the franchise in points for a defenseman with McCabe, and total assists, with Ray Whitney.

If the title of this thread was, "The Islanders and Kichton are in contract negotiations" there would not be six pages on whether he should get this amount of money or that amount of money.

And I think success in juniors is far better than success in college hockey. THAT type of success.

Possibly more indicative than success in Europe {maybe not Russia or C.R.}

Plus, they don't own Sustr's rights like they do with Kichton.
Sustr signed with Tampa Bay the other day

Yup, I wonder if we'll get any updates of Kichton's situation within the next week.

We still haven't heard any updates. Garth may be trying to see if he can get Scott Mayfield signed before giving a roster spot to Kichton.

Probably no updates while Spokane is in the play-offs. They lead their series 2-0 and will likely
advance to the second round.

If there is any truth to the report that the Isles were in on Andre Sustr, the UFA that signed with Tampa, the signing of Kichton should not be tied to Mayfield. Since they were not able to sign Sustr, they should have some money left to get Kichton signed assuming they are interested in doing so.

Signing Kichton has nothing to do with having enough money left over. It's a 2 way ELC. He will play in the AHL anywhere from 1-3 years at least. This has more to do with:

1) 50 contract limit
2) Setting precedent that any prospect that outperforms their draft status should not expect a larger ELC.
3) Do the Isles believe he's a legitimate contract?

With all those considered you can't help but think this is what a normal negotiation looks like. This one just happened to become public.

Little bit of Kichton news from Staple's chat today:

Quote:
That would be Brenden Kichton, whose WHL season just ended. He rejected the Isles' contract offer; from what I understand, there won't be another one coming. I'm not sure if he can reenter the draft or if he's too old and would just become a free agent, but I believe the Isles may be looking to trade his rights for a pick in the June draft. He won't be Islander property.
Sounds like he is as good as gone.

That's fine to me. He wasn't one of our top prospects anyway. I'd be pissed if it was Strome, Pedan or Mayfield. It being Kichton ... i'm not caring. If Snow gets a pick out of trading his rights, unless he's using that pick to package for a good top 4 defenseman at this point, i probably still won't care.

Hopefully he's another Blake Kessel then. At 23, Kessel can't even stick in the AHL, despite Philadelphia's thin defensive depth.

I wonder if any teams would be interested trading for him now. While he can't play in the playoffs they might want to see how he plays in the AHL

I am guessing he could fetch a 6th rounder at best though

Hard to say. Some teams might view him as a 4th rounder, so getting him for a 5th would be a deal. I agree, I dont think there will be a tremendous amount of interest in the draft.

Garth has done a good job of getting guys with NHL potential (other than Clark) signed, so I hope he knows what he is doing with Kichton.

But he did let Spurgeon walk, so I'm going to cross my fingers on this one.

I Know Snow...he has his eyes on someone in the first round...he is gonna trade to a weaker team that needs a lot of depth...ie...trading rights to Streit, Boyes, Reasoner and Kitchton plus whatever else is required. We KNEW we couldn't keep them all. I'm just glad it wasnt brock or lee...just Kitchton so far.

I am upset we didnt sign him but I cannot blame the kid.. You work hard and you know your worth more. Why take peanuts. I turned down jobs in the past because I knew I was worth more then what the company was offering. Kitchon would probably be drafted in the 2nd round now or might even go late first round. He is older and NHL ready.. who wouldnt take a gamble on that.

Still one more day until deadline, but all indications are #Isles will not sign 2011 5th-round D Brenden Kichton.

That sucks, I was hoping to have him on the team. He will easily make it to the 2nd round if not 1st round since he is NHL ready

This is really strange. I wish we could get some explanation behind it.

So...we redraft him. Why not? It'll make for fun headlines. Hope he's around in the third round.

He is undersized & that is why he fell to the 5th round. But he's been highly productive in juniors. He wants 1st or 2nd round $ and the Isles aren't willing to give it to him.

NHL ready? He hasn't played one game of professional hockey and he's suddenly NHL ready, over Donovan?
