Why do we want Kipper?

He hasn't performed well, and he is in the twilight of his career.

2 buyouts, 1 this off season, 1 the following.

there is a good chance Mike Smith will hit free agency this year.... would be much more comfortable riding one of Reimer/Scrivens and going for either Smith or another option in the off-season.

I'd much rather go after Miller.

I know he's said he hates Toronto but I've always thought that he means in a competitive sort of way, because we're division rivals.

I doubt Buffalo even entertains the idea of trading him within the conference, let alone the same division, but its just what the doctor ordered for the Leafs.

I was under the impression that we had 2 buyouts that are available until the end of next off season. Whether we use both this off season, 1 in each, both in next off season or not at all. I don't think we are limited to using 1 per year.

Miller is a UFA? Nifty.
Well, Toronto/Boston has no qualms, I think truthfully if it gets you what you want, you bit the bullet and go for it.

But you just know, we get Miler and he doesn't play 1.10th the awesomeness he played in Olympics/Buffalo.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
College UFA G Jared Coreau of Northern Michigan in DET tomorrow. Tentative agreement in place with Wings tho actual signing date TBD.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Bottom line, though, is Coreau will be Red Wing property.

Looks like the free wallet season has started

So we could, you know hope for a miracle, and trade Komi and Grabo/Liles, and save the buyouts for next year?

Yep.

My hope we can get one of the d-men (Dekeyser or Sustr)

They are supposed to be the two best D in the group with DeKeyser being the best.

This is from last year and we had interest in him then and I would suspect we still do.

Dan DeKeyser, D
Sophomore, Western Michigan University

With 30 NHL teams pursuing him, Dan DeKeyser has become the hottest commodity on the collegiate free agent market this season. And itís not hard to see why. Two NHL teams that have shown some of the greatest interest in the Broncos rearguard are the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I would take either, But I think Dekeyser will end up a Red wing. But with Sustr a 6'8 right handed shot defenseman who's mobile(for 6'8) is an enticing package.

Nice pick up.

I'd like to see us pick up Eric Hartzell from Quinnipiac. 1.5 GAA and .935 save percentage, in the ECAC (which is a pretty solid D 1 league) seems like he pretty much led his team to first place. He is 6'4" so not tiny either.

Well you just never know, we need a really good defenceman and we may be able to offer him a better deal but he is the premium player in this years crop.

Sustr is the second best D in this crop but if he can play defence his size is huge, he's one big boy.

Quote:
Andrej Sustr, defenseman, Nebraska-Omaha

Itís the first thing that everyone talks about when Sustrís name comes up. Heís big. Like, Zdeno Chara big. But thereís one other thing they all say about the 6′-8Ē, 225-pound blueliner: Heís going to require some patience.

When can Trevor van Riemsdyk be signed? Seems like he has done well with New Hampshire and is only 21 so not sure when he is elligible, but it would ironic if we got the vR brothers.

That's the thing with a lot of these college free agents. They're not being drafted and they have the luxury of choosing the team they sign with. Of course they're going to sign with their favourite team they grew up dreaming of playing for as a kid.

Miller seems like a cancer to be honest. He's got a big whiny mouth like Jeremy Roenick in his prime (without the humour) and walks around like he's Patrick Roy, yet he hasn't played all that well since 2010.

TVR would have a lot of trouble cracking the Leafs line up within the next few years. He would be buried behind guys like Gardiner, Rielly, Percy, Finn, Blacker, etc., etc., etc. If he wants a legit shot he would be smart to sign with a team like Edmonton or Minnesota.

Quote:
The trade chatter around the NHL will undoubtedly pick up in intensity this week, as the GM’s will meet in Toronto on Wednesday, but things have been relatively quiet since there are a lot of teams still with the mindset of being in a race for the playoffs and not ready to sell off.

HNIC’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned on Saturday’s Hot Stove that the prices currently being demanded by the few sellers out there is ridiculous, but that may change with another two weeks of games determining whether more teams decide to join the selloff.

Hockeybuzz blogger John Jaeckel reports that Toronto scouts were seen at two Rockford IceHogs(Chicago’s AHL affiliate) - Chicago Wolves(Vancouver’s farm club) games over the weekend, which could be indicative of nothing or it could mean that they have particular interest in a young prospect. Jaeckel believes there is something afoot as former Habs GM Pierre Gauthier was in Toronto a few weeks ago and scouted the Leafs.

The Black Hawks do not have many weaknesses, as their 23-2-3 record would attest, but like any contending team they are looking for quality depth in preparation for a lengthy and arduous playoff run and could be in the market for Leafs pending unrestricted free agents Tyler Bozak or Clarke MacArthur if the price is right.

This

I like Kipper BUT he has 1 year left on his deal worth 1.5M...

I highly doubt he plays in the NHL next year when he can go to Russia for 1 year and make triple that...

Sources telling #NHLNetwork the Anaheim Ducks are on the verge of re-signing Corey Perry.

For what it's worth.

Should be interesting to see what he gets. Though I suppose speculation will continue until that deal gets announced saying "hey, could be a sign and trade."
