I...dont know bout that one. Feds is useless. Holmstrom can do everything Feds does but actually wins faceoffs. Holmstrom can play on the PK (and does a good job) and chip in the odd offense.
Feds is more of a left winger. Holmstrom can still kill penalties as well. Also, from what I remember, Holmstrom is more of a speedy, agitator kind of guy.
That's cool. He's getting a bit old (I mean, to breakout), I don't expect him to have a full time role in the NHL (maybe on the 4th line...) in his career, but he's a good call-up when needed and he's good for the phantoms.
Uhhh, why? He hasn't looked all that impressive during his time in the NHL or the AHL for that matter.
Holmstrom has been up for the Flyers for 7 games in his career. Give him more consistent play time. Betts was our 4th line center in the 2010-11 season. Couts was our 4th line center in the 2011-12 season. Holmstrom is kind of what we need when it comes to a 4th line center. Win face-offs, be a good PKer and have good speed and grit. Also, he's cheap and available to us immediately.
??? Uhh thats not true at all... NHL I agree with but he is a 4th line guy. AHL he has been very good.
Meh, I don't know if I would say "very good." He has been good, but being good in the AHL doesn't equate to a spot on the NHL team. If he wins the spot out camp, fine. But I certainly wouldn't just pencil him in as 4C and call it quits. There are a number of players that can fill that role out there better than Holmstrom can, albeit for slightly more money (including players already on the roster...Talbot, Fedotenko come to mind).

The fact that he has been up for only seven games in his career should be a pretty good indicator of his value. He has been here for three years and is consistently passed on when a call-up is needed. Now all of the sudden he is a 4C because he got a contract extension.

That's what I'm thinking. Not a bad thing to extend him, but I wouldn't pencil him in on the NHL roster any time soon.
I could say to make Holmstrom our 4C next season, let Laughton take his place in the AHL for the season next year and then bring up Laughton to the big club the year after?

Holmstrom has played 7 games in the NHL and from that he can already do what Fedotenko does at this level? I'm not one to write him off and say that he can't do it, but you can't be serious...

Laughton is not eligible to play in the AHL next year

Laughton will be too young for AHL next year, IIRC, it's either OHL again or the big club. I'm not sure a final year of Jr as 1C, Team Canada at the WJC, etc. would be a bad thing for Laughton. But if he's really ready, and he makes the team, so be it.

What does Feds currently do that no one else can do?
Not saying Holmstrom can even play in the NHL, but its the "Feds is better" thing that is funny. Unless Im missing this super reliable play that Feds is bringing.
Career AHLer. Solid call up for a couple of games when injuries strike.
But they can find a more capable 4th line center in free agency. Holmstrom is just not a very good player and there is not much hope that will significantly improve at age 26.
Didn't T. Murray move him to wing before he got injured? That would reduce his chances of being called up to fill in as the 4th line center next year...
Meh, whatever. I guess we need guys like this signed, as well, but on the other hand, when you know he's never going to amount to much, isn't this a waste of a contract spot? And then we're forced to let players that actually have potential go or trade them, because we don't have any space left.

So you don't even know if he's even an NHLer, but he's better than the guy who has proven to be a solid bottom six forward in over 800 NHL games and somehow manages to be a plus player on this disaster of a team? Got it.

Are you seriously saying that a 4th line guy who is a plus player is good? Im just saying that Feds is EASILY replaceable. BTW look at what I said of Holmstrom. No where did I say he was better, just said he can bring the same thing Feds does.
The games dont mean much before this season. I know he is a vet and alot of people like the "he's a vet so hes important" argument, but that along with him being an x-flyer, there is nothing else he really brings.
For refernce, Kurtis Foster has played 396 NHL games and Bruno Gervias 407. Im guessing since they played alot of NHL games their better than Gustafsson?
yeah I was just coming to post this. Hes coming off a rather significant knee injury. Lets see how he looks coming back from injury before being handed a roster spot.
