LatvianTwist's 2013 Mock Draft 1.0

Pick Team Player Position Reasoning
1st Seth Jones Defender Arguably the most talented player in the draft, Jones adds to an already solid defense to give Florida one of the brighter futures in the NHL.
2nd Nathan MacKinnon Center An easy choice, Washington gives themselves a ridiculous one-two punch with Backstrom and now MacKinnon up the middle.
3rd Aleksandr Barkov Center A tough decision here, as they could use Drouin as well, but I think Barkov is going to be a better player than Drouin, and Buffalo's center depth becomes scary with Hodgson, Ennis, Grigorenko, Girgensons, and now Barkov.
4th Jonathan Drouin Winger 3 top 6 centers already on the roster, and while they could use a defender, Drouin is easily the BPA here. He'll look amazing next to Duchene in the future.
5th Sean Monahan Center Needing defense more than anything, they put aside their needs and go with the BPA. Great insurance for Lecavalier, and he'll be a great trading chip if they do find him redundant.
6th Elias Lindholm Center Even with Gagner's emergence, they could still use a better, bigger #2 center, and they get exactly that with Lindholm. Also being the BPA, they set up what looks to be one of the best top 6's in the entire league.
7th Hunter Shinkaruk Winger Needing depth all across their prospect pool, they go with an extremely talented player who could be a huge success in the future.
8th Darnell Nurse Defender Pretty much a stereotypical Flyers' pick, he'll be a Pronger-lite player, and hopefully become the #1 they need more than anything.
9th Rasmus Ristolainen Defender Another team looking for a #1 defender, they go with a well-rounded stud on the blue-line who could contribute as early as next season. He also fits the need of a blue-chipper their prospect pool needs.
10th Adam Erne Winger Thin pickings remain, as they won't take a chance on Nichushkin IMO, and Erne is the best forward outside of him. Not a bad pick, but their fear of Russians could bite them here.
11th Ryan Pulock Defender Another team that will shy away from the highly skilled Russian, they add another piece to their factory of defensemen. Weber, Josi, Klein, Ellis, and now Pulock all look to restore Nashville to the defensive powerhouse they were before losing Suter.
12th (via NYR) Nikita Zadorov Defender With none of the forwards being good enough to pick here, the Blue Jackets take the hefty Russian defender. With a much lower risk of bolting to the KHL, they'll take him over Nichushkin any day.
13th Valeri Nichushkin Winger Ecstatic to grab a player who's probably top 5 in terms of talent this draft, they'll gladly take the risk in order to possibly add a legit first line winger to Tavares' line.
14th Frederick Gauthier Center A huge center, he'll compliment Hanzal very well. Although they could use a winger more here, Gauthier's size and skill-set is too good to pass up.
15th Alex Wennberg Winger A skilled winger, San Jose finally adds a guy who won't add to the logjam at center. His well rounded game will fit in well there, as well.

Pick Team Player Position Reasoning
16th Josh Morrissey Defender A bit of a fall, the Hurricanes will be happy to add a talented, two-way defender with some great, high-end potential.
17th Curtis Lazar Center A once touted top 10 pick, his play hasn't continued to warrant such a high pick, but the Devils feel as though he's still worth it, very happy to add someone with as much talent as he possesses at 17.
18th Max Domi Center Couldn't be more a perfect fit, playing for the team his father was practically a legend on. He'll hopefully become the #1 center they've needed for so long.
19th Bo Horvat Center A great center, he'll be a nice compliment to Scheifele and Burmistrov going forward. His skill-set and style of play seem to fit Winnipeg quite well, also.
20th Anthony Mantha Winger A skilled winger, he only falls because of character issues, but the Canucks are willing to look past those and hope he can turn into a top 6 winger going forward.
21st Robert Hagg Defender A high-octane offensive defender, he adds to a great top 4 that looks to include Suter, Brodin, Dumba, and now Hagg.
22nd (via Los Angeles) Zach Fucale Goaltender Even though they seem to have finally found a starter in Bobrovsky, they could still use some longterm insurance, and there's no better option than Fucale this year.
23rd Artturi Lehkonen Winger A typical European pick by the Wings, they see the skill and potential that other teams don't, adding him to guys like Nyquist and Jarnkrok with long-term high-end potential.
24th Ryan Hartman Winger A skilled, hard-working winger, the Senators are happy to add him to an already deep pool of wing prospects.
25th Mirco Mueller Defender A big, solid defender, he's insurance for Cole as a partner for Pietrangelo, and also adds good depth to their prospect pool.
26th Morgan Klimchuk Center Something about him just makes me feel like he's got a home in Boston. While they don't need anymore centers, I could see him being a rock in their bottom 6 with the possibility of top 6 time not too crazy.
27th Andre Burakovsky Winger After taking a bit of a fall, he finally finds a home in Montreal, as they're happy to add a big, talented winger to their deep prospect pool.
28th Valentin Zykov Winger A talented winger, the Penguins hope to have finally found a top 6 winger who can mesh well with Crosby or Malkin.
29th Kerby Rychel Winger The Ducks take a risk on a guy who could be a steal if he turns out. A high risk, high reward player with a lot of skill, but there's questions about whether his game will translate to the NHL.
30th Jacob de La Rose Winger A solid two-way winger, he adds some good forward depth to an already very deep team, and looks to be a solid option on the 3rd line for years to come.

Drouin for Buffalo, we already have a big center prospect in Grigorenko.

Nothing remotely close to Drouin in our system

At #4 Sabres would go Barkov

That high, you always go BPA, and I'm just not sold on Drouin. He's very talented, obviously, but I think Barkov has just as much offensive potential and brings more to the table defensively and physically.

Can never have too many centers, one of them could be traded for a winger or simply moved to the wing if they all turn out.

I have no problem with Toronto picking Rychel, but as a Mooseheads fan, I would want Fucale at that spot.

I would consider Drouin the BPA at that point, to each his own

Huge fan of Wennberg, would love him as the Sharks' pick.

Also, I think Zykov is a great choice for the Penguins.

I really hope the Preds don't draft another d-man. Either try and move up by packaging our 1st with Blum/Ellis or take BFA. Picking another defensman is embarrassing.

1-10 looks great. Plus I like how you explain every selection you make
Only real problem I have is the Ducks pick.
If Max Domi is still on the table at pick 29. I would hope the Ducks would pick him.

I could see Calgary and Nashville switching spots here, something like:

7th + 37th for 10th + Blum/Ellis

And then the Preds snag Shinkaruk, while Calgary either goes with Pulock or Nichushkin.

Only reason I don't see them going with Nichushkin is because of Radulov.

Updated the list, forgot to add Domi in there. My bad.

Only picks that changed were Toronto's and Anaheim's. Hope it looks better.

Definitely plausible, I'd really like to add a 2nd in this year's draft.

Obviously the positions are gonna change though, or else I'd be pretty confident something like that would go down, actually.

Only thing is I don't think Columbus would pick Fucale, they got Oscar Dansk at 31st overall last year.

I'm not really sure about that. Dansk doesn't have the elite potential Fucale has, and with 3 1st rounders, Columbus can afford to take a risk of a goaltender.

They could use another one, as both Kunitz and Dupuis aren't exactly young.

I was just kidding. Trust me, I'm still definitely on the "we need a top 6 winger" bandwagon but Beau has done very well filling up the space on the Malkin line.
