Prince Alberts Appreciation Thread

The guy has come into the living support and been one of are best defencemen. For the amount of time he sat at the start of the year and not once did he complain. I think he will be an important piece in the coming run.

All hail Prince Alberts!

No, its just that Barker makes him look good.

Seriously though, he's clearly picked it up starting with the Kings game when he leveled a few of them.

I agree regarding him not complaining about being benched for more than the first half of the season. He has also done a good job in his role in the games he has played. He looks very big out there cause he is actually using his size.

He's starting to play like he did in 2010-11 after his first stint with the team, when he was quite effective with his physicality.

When he's on his game, Alberts is a capable bottom pairing defenceman.

Normally, I'd be tempted to agree but Alberts made Seabrook his ***** on a number of the plays tonight. That is by far and wide the best game I have seen him play.

I've always liked him as a bottom pairing guy. I don't get the fuss about him, people have expectations for him to be a Norris calibre defenceman but he's a very good 5th-6th guy

Alberts has been great for about a month now. I've always been a fan and think he takes a bad rap around here, especially when you compare the Inspector Gadget length leash Keith Ballard gets from most of this forum.

I think Alberts has earned another contract, and hopefully is the 6th/7th guy with Corrado next year.

Definitely his best game tonight. He's been playing pretty well these past few games. When they show the guy on the bench he looks like he just doesn't give a fu*k. I dig it.

Awards:
Ah, Alberts. This is well earned, but so was the criticism earlier this year - he was an absolute abomination in his first few games. Fortunately, it appears he has settled in and is now playing some pretty damn solid hockey. Props where they are due.

I've always thought that he was/should be as good if not better than Rome was, but then his play dramatically fell off for a little while. Not sure what it was

I think this is a massive strawman argument. I don't think anyone expected him to be more than a 6th defenseman. He delivered for some stretches, then he was worth complaining about for others.

There were a few stretches where he legitimately looked awful. And now he looks better than Ballard.

Against a team like St. Louis or LA, Alberts is probably a better lineup decision than Ballard. You need a guy who will bring it physically and punish opposing forecheckers.

Definitely NHL calibre. Would still prefer he's out of the top-6 when everyone's healthy though. 7th defenseman is the perfect role for him.

I've always been a bit skeptical of the hate Alberts has received (at least, outside that initial run where he looked like he had no clue what our system was after his initial acquisition).

He is what he is...and that's a big, physical bottom-pairing defenceman who is the consummate 'team guy'. He never ever whines, never complains, just does whatever he's asked to the best of his abilities. At times...he's asked to do things beyond his abilities and he looks terrible. But as a #7D, he's about as good as you can realistically hope for. And it's not like he's paid the big bucks. He's paid like a #6/7D, and he offers value at that rate.

Also, really digging the hair wings lately. Very chill.

Am I the only one who hasn't forgotten who completely hopeless and unplayable Alberts was in both the 2010 and 2011 playoffs?

Is the same player and hasn't changed. He's always been able to be a somewhat serviceable #7 during the regular season (for the record, his corsi numbers, etc., for us this year still suck) who can kinda get by and not screw up too badly. Then the speed of the game picks up in the playoffs and he's left in the dust.

Should also be noted that he plays the sort of game that gets less criticism than it deserves. He doesn't make the sort of Sopel/Ballard/Barker obvious brainfarts where it's immediately obvious that he's gifted away a scoring chance or a goal. But his gap control is bloody awful - something that's much harder for casual fans to notice - and players entering our zone consistently get a ton of time and space to make plays against him. It's why his advanced stats are always so poor. He's never 'out of position' but his defensive zone coverage is ridiculously soft (and no, throwing a big hit on occasion doesn't mean you can't also have soft defensive coverage).

I just found that people were overlooking the positives with players like Alberts, who plays bottom minutes, and were pointing the little negatives that were hardly noticeable.

Alberts is a good physical bottom pairing defenceman when he plays his game. Where he gets into trouble is with penalties and when he tries to do too much. What I've liked the most during this stretch is his ability to make the hits without taking the penalties for boarding, interference etc. If he plays like this he gives us a good physical presence on the back end.
