Because its only 1 year it might not be that tough.

Teams will have space... An Vanek can be traded anywhere so the options are there.

Teams will make it work. Hell, we could take some salary back I it's expiring too as long a it's in addition to picks and prospects.

Have to see if we could do a deal and get an elite winger or at least a couple of really promising ones in return. We really are stuffed if he doesn't want to stick around, we'll end up being Columbus bad and no-one wants that.

There isn't enough .
You know, I said that in response to Bryzgalov DUCKING out of the way of a puck and getting scored on...I'm sure at that very moment there would be some desperate Flyers fans clamoring for that trade. It wasn't 100% serious. But they should be waving Miller in front of Flyers faces this off season.

If Miller was traded to Philly I hope to god Simmonds is coming back. The team would be full of heart and soul players in 2-3 years. All of whom have some offensive upside.

It will be interesting to see what happens.
Playoff failure makes teams do crazy things. Though I like the Hawks and Blues as far as WC teams go, a part of me hopes their goaltenders turn into pumpkins and cost them dearly.

I'm not saying it is impossible. All I'm saying is that it will be tougher given the size of the cap hit and if Regier is still the GM, we've seen him try and hold on for max value in return....

Max value might come at the deadline.

Just because he wants out doesn't mean that you can trade a guy.

Exhibit A: Roberto Luongo yesterday.

Just because they're not happy with being at the start of a rebuild, doesn't mean they won't buy into the idea.

I mean what they're supposed to say?
"Yeah, awesome rebuild. We don't care anyway about the team, we just want get paid."

^^ Adding to that..... He says nothing about wanting out.... Just wanting answers as to what the plan is and where he fits going forward.

Luongo, as he so candidly admitted yesterday, has an awful contract. He is signed through 2022. As in 9 years from now. Miller, though a slightly higher cap hit, is only signed through next year. He is infinitely more moveable than Luongo.

Luongo couldn't be moved because of his contract. He even admitted that himself.

Luongo is under contract at a $5 million cap hit til 2021, so thats a bit different.

Vanek and Miller will be traded. We could retain half thier salaries for a year in order to get a better return. We won't need the cap space next yet anyway.

They'll both be on the block starting this summer until they get traded by next deadline.

I bet at least one of them is gone sooner though.

Cap hit should not be a detriment for the Sabres to move Vanek or Miller for another reason:

I do not foresee the Sabres spending to the cap next year, mostly because of all the young players not making ****loads of money.

Therefore, the Sabres can definitely afford to hold on to some of the salary/cap hit for both Vanek and Miller. Hell, this could even be a good bargaining chip--we'll pay half the contract, you give us more assets in return. Because they would come off the books after next year anyways, it wouldn't screw up the future cap situation either. This also means teams that are tight to the cap because of the cap coming down are back in play, since they won't need as much cap space to fit Miller/Vanek in.

The same could be said of Stafford, but his cap hit is likely not an issue plus the extra year makes it less worth it to retain cap/salary in a trade. The beauty of Vanek and Miller's deals are that they're gone either way next offseason...so you only have to worry about having the cap space for 1 season.

Miller is bothered that a teammate and friend of several years is gone. I'd be sad/upset too. Heck, I'd be bothered if Miller was not upset about that. It also makes sense with everything else going on for him to talk with Regier about his future.

In other words, what's the big deal here?

Not necessarily. He wasn't happy when Goose got traded last year either. I can't imagine many players are happy when a friend gets traded away. They are human after all.

Well, I can see why he wasn't named captain now. I wonder what we can get for him at the draft.

This emotional stuff attributed to Miller and Vanek kinda P's me Off. It sounds like classic case of "denial is a river in Egypt" syndrome. Maybe I'm too cold but the players are directly culpable here and need to look themselves in the mirror. They are paid to perform and really haven't in any sort of consistent way as a team over the past 3 seasons.

I don't think that Darcy should get a pass either. But it's nice to finally see some accountability assigned in this organization. Hopefully, coaching and players are just the beginning....
