Exactly, Luongo couldn't get the deal he has now if he was a U F A

Both contracts are bad for different reasons, Lu's is long but a great cap hit, Grabo's is a huge overpayment for what he brings, especially on our team.

So bad contracts cancel out, then in terms of value. Lu > Grabo. Asking you to retain 1 - 1.5 in Cap space really isn't much, especially since you will be ditching a big contract in Connolly and possibly another one in MacArthur.
Grabo's Cap Hit according to Cap Geek is 5.550 mil 4yrs remaining, Lou has a 5.333 million hit with 10yrs remaining. Where do you get that the Leafs should be sending money your way? No way Nonis sends Money Nucks way to supplement your GM's shortcoming in offering stupid contracts.

Why don't the Leafs and Canuck fans just agree to disagree???

There is obviously a huge difference between what each team expects from any trade involving Luongo. As a Leaf fan (like most fans of their team) we probably over value our teams players and under values other teams.
Trading Luongo is going to be extremely difficult as he has a tough contract but it is clear Gillis is not going to give him away cheap.
I think this is more than a salary dump as Luo has the potential and is one of the best goalies in the league-which obviously teams are trying to expose this contract but for a team (like Toronto) this acquisition could make a huge difference to our team and Gillis knows this.

If Nonis feels the contract is stupid, there's no need to pursue Luongo at all. Unless, he's in the habit of taking on "stupid" contracts.

The conversation stops right there. No reason to discuss Grabovski's contract or whatever else beyond just looking at Luongo's contract. If, however, Nonis pursues a conversation with Gillis, after looking at that contract, then we can safely assume that he doesn't feel it's "stupid".

Luongo for Grabovski? I'm a leaf fan and even I can see how bad this looks for Vancouver.

There's no chance Vancouver is gonna pay Grabovski 5.5M to be their 3C.

When was the last time a Luongo proposal was initiated from a fan of a team other than Vancouver?

Yup. Bringing in Grabovski and paying him more than Kesler isn't an option. if the Leafs absorb $1.5mil of his salary then it's something the Canucks might look at. $4mil for a 3rd line centre isn't ideal but Grabo is worth that money as he would likely slide up to the 2nd line at times to pair up with Kesler.

There might be a team in the NHL that covets Grabo at $5.5mil, Vancouver is not one of those teams.

We know for a fact Nonis covets Luongo at $5.3mil.

i understand why this trade isn't good for Vancouver without the Leafs retaining salary

but it just isn't an option for the Leafs because Grabo's cortract is for another 4 years

we all know know Luongo is a world class goalie

his caphit isn't bad, but it is 4 or 5 years too long

Vancouver wont get a better player than Grabo in a trade unless thay are on a equally bad contract

they will get a quantity for Luongo, not quality

Its actually a really good start. Vancouver will certainly need to be taking some salary back, and even though Gabrovski has a big hit, its not ridiculous. There might need to be some minor pieces included, but nothing super crazy like Gardiner.

Considering how often Kesler is healthy, Gabrovski would spend a lot of time as the 2C. They certainly need a 3C who can step up and be a 2C on their roster.

If VAN wants grabovski @ 4mil I'd definitely listen... just not if we're taking on LU's contract.

Agreed. The Canucks arent going to get young premier prospects or even one. Grabovski is the best type of player they can hope for. They're not going to take on that type of horrible contract in return though.. At least they'd be ridiculously stupid to do so.

Ha ha, Vancouver fans have to understand that Luongo has a terrible contract, no goalie market these days, NHL cap going down next year, some good UFA goalies becoming available (Smith, Backstom) and they want to scoff at Grabo as a bad return in a trade? Best thing would be for Gillis to try and trade Cory instead because he would bring back a much better booty.
