Leafs Roster analysis - Forwards - Joffrey Lupul

Since FishManSam hasn't been around the last two days, I thought I'd help out.

__________________________________________________ _____________________

I will be going through our roster and injured players and we will determine the players role... i.e Kessel (Elite winger) vs (1A winger) vs (1B winger) vs (2A winger)

This is not determining their role for the team, but what they're capable of on a playoff team. I'll only be putting what in my mind are "realistic" options.

Term definitions:

Elite: Top 5 in their position
1A: 1st line/1st pairing/#1 Goalie
1B: Able to fill in 1st line/1st pairing/Average Starter
2A: 2nd line/2nd pairing/Back-up
2B: Able to fill in 2nd line/2nd pairing/Too good for AHL Starter but not proven
3A: 3rd line/3rd pairing
3B Able to fill in 3rd line/3rd pairing
4A 4th line
4B: Able to fill in 4th line
Scratch: 13th player/7th dman
AHL player: Self explanatory

I'll be starting from the net out.

Right now I would say 1B. He has had 1 good season, on pace for a couple other good seasons before injury. To me a 1A is someone you can rely on consistently, hard to rely on someone if they miss 15+ games each year due to injury (even if they are freak injuries). If he stays healthy I think he can become a 1A.

He looked like an elite lw in his one game back. He was at least a 1A last season and about a 2A through his career. So based on his play lately I'd say he's a 1A

I'll say 2A until we have a better sample size. Last year was by far a career year for him. Hard to judge a guy based off of that.

It'd be like doing this poll about M. Richards or J. Carter after their respective 80+ point seasons (despite them more widely considered ~65 point 1B centres), or after Briere's 95 point season which he's never come close to replicating, after Vaneks 40 goal 80+ point campaign, etc etc. Plenty of guys have career years, and surpass their career averages by ~20 points, 10-15 goals, etc. Doesn't mean that's the expectation for all other years.

Last season could easily just be a flash in the pan for Lupul. Pretty hard to say at this point.

1B Left Winger.

I do agree that we do need a larger sample size to make me more confident of giving him that grade.

Definitely a 1B - borderline 2A. Needs more seasons of consistency before we can praise him as a consistent 1A winger.

1B for now; but if he continues to produce, he'll be a 1A

I don't count injuries as having anything to do with what we are assessing, which is talent/production/play.

Lupul may just be one of those late-blooming stars . . . because before coming to Toronto, he would have been a 2B for me. A serviceable guy, who could win you a game or two during the season, but would never be anything but an addition to the offense.

But ever since coming here, he has looked every bit a first liner - his skill level has been very close to Kessel's, and his production has been up there too. I would say DESPITE the injuries - and the forearm is a freak one that is just bad luck - he has been amazing.

So, because the sample size is a bit less than one would want to be able to say 1A, I have to go with 1B. But last night is yet another step towards that 1A . . .

He's our 1A played very well last year, but he has had the benefits of some great passes the past two games. Time will tell if he's a 1A on most playoff teams.
