Not exactly the Mark Messier Award for playoff leadership one would hope for.
Ribs was actually PPG his las playoffs, and I don't care for his reasoning if he plays well. Even if he gets tired of too long vacations.

I'm pretty sure that came out wrong. He isn't exactly Brooks Laich here. I read it too but I didn't get the sense that he meant "PHEW! I'm SO glad we missed the playoffs!!" but more like "Frack! We missed the playoffs...oh well at least I get a summer off"

If he meant that as in his first season in the league, I imagine most guys that age are probably relieved to have the season done at that point, given how unfamiliar the grind would be to many of them and how much guys that age just wear out by the end of the season. I'm not going to hold the fact that he didn't lie about that feeling against him.

At this point McPhee would have to move a few guys who I can't see him moving to be able to fit Ribeiro in. Plus I can't see McPhee giving him the term he wants so at this point I think there is very little chance Ribeiro comes back.

Maybe if he just has a fantastic playoffs and the Caps get to the 3rd round that would convince McPhee to do what is necessary to keep him but I'm not holding my breath on that.

Whyno has a piece today about "Mike Ribeiro could earn nice deal with strong playoffs for #Caps".

I am sticking to my guns and predicting he does not buyout/trade Sarge (assuming he is eligible). Can't we lobby for a Redden clause?

While the Erat acquisition makes it less likely to retain Ribs, moving others can still buy us the room. I do not 100% think Ribs is a goner. Short of a finals visit, George gave up too much for a rental and he will not want to give up so easily.

The problem is that even if he does move Schultz there isn't nearly enough left to re-sign Ribeiro unless he also moves someone who I don't see him moving like Laich or Ward.

I could see him move Chimera but unless he gets Alzner and Johansson to sign deals a decent amount lower than I expect them to get that isn't enough either and that is without even replacing Chimera on the roster with a guy making the minimum.

And that is also with letting Hendricks walk.

I can see how it can work but I don't see how it will work personally...

I am being a bit obsessed with the Sarge retained thing perhaps, but think others are simply writing him off when I am not sure George thinks its time. These big Dmen do take a long time to mature, and he is only costing us under 3M for 1 year.

I do think Alzner and JoJo come in on the lower side. I have said it before and still think Volpatti/Latta is the replacement for Hendricks. Chimera would have to go.

I am not sure that is enough but think it may be close.

A trade would have to happen to fill any cap room shortage. I think George recently said he has a plan to retain Ribs, but may have lied.

McPhee said he had a plan. He did not say that that plan involved retaining Ribeiro.

I'm penciling in the combined cap hit for Alzner's and Johansson's RFA deals to be $5 mil.

He certainly choose to talk about his plan only when asked directly about Ribeiro, not how he is going to address the C position with Ribeiro gone, for instance.

On if the Caps can re-sign Mike Ribeiro: We have a plan in place. It’s been in place for a while. So you don’t have to worry about where we are with the cap or anything like that because we’re not worried about it.
Perhaps we sign and then trade him, all a pre-arranged deal waiting for the offseason.

he said that IF

Yeah, he seemed like he was being deliberately hard to read (as usual). Who knows.

Plans fall through. It doesn't matter if he has a plan, as it takes 2 to tango.

He is one tough egg to crack. He almost says nothing when he speaks.

It was interesting that he went on to start talking about the cap, which with Ribs out of the picture, is not really anything to be concerned about here in April.

When I run the numbers with likely Alzner/MJ/Ribeiro/Hendricks contracts, the current roster would be ~6.4M over the cap next year.. maybe a bit less than that if Caps get lucky in negotiations.

Possible cuts are:
Neuvirth: 1.9 (well 2.5, but then you have to add back at least 0.6 for Gru..bayern munich as backup)
Schultz: 2.75 (or 2 in savings if Caps have to take the 750K buyout cap hit)
and then two of (though if you cut 2 forwards, probably need to at least add a 13th guy on a min salary):
Chimera: 1.75
Hendricks: 1 (that's what I'm assuming he'd get if re-signed)
Ward: 3
Laich: 4.5

So there are a few ways to skin that cat (my new favorite horrible expression, lol), e.g.:
-Schultz-Ward-Chimera
-Neuvirth-Ward-Chimera
-Schultz-Neuvirth-Chimera-Hendricks

If we assume that Laich is retained (hard to see McPhee trading him) it does look to me like 2 out of (Schultz, Neuvirth, Ward) absolutely have to go to make the numbers work to retain Ribeiro.

So if Caps re-sign Ribeiro, I think Ward is a goner, along with one of Schultz/Neuvy, and (at least) one of Chimera/Hendricks. If I had to bet, my money would be on Schultz-Ward-Chimera being gone, though even that is very close if Schultz has to be bought out.

What is buyout cap hit? There's no such thing.

Yes there is. If Schultz gets bought out, the Caps are penalized with a $750K cap hit.

If they buy out 3 guys, only 2 can be compliance buyouts. I REALLY don't see that happening.

Unless he actually is eligible for a compliance buyout (and I do think that 3mil+ limitation was only for the early buyouts).

Whatever happened to sk8? All this would probably already be in a sticky.

Regardless, there is such a thing as a buyout cap hit.

She posts frequently on Japers'. Don't know how people can do that regularly though. The format is terrible to navigate.
