Rank the 1st overall forwards of the last 15 years in "skill"
I'm not talking effort, or speed, or numbers. Just pure "skill". Sniping, passing, stick-handling/dangling, puck-handling, finesse, etc.
1997 - Thornton
1998 - Lecavalier
1999 - Stefan
2001 - Kovalchuk
2002 - Nash
2004 - Ovechkin
2005 - Crosby
2007 - Kane
2008 - Stamkos
2009 - Tavares
2010 - Hall
2011 - RNH
2012 - Yakupov

Curious to see the results, I think it's inevitable that Stefan finishes last, nothing he showed in junior actually showed up in the NHL

Weird/vague criteria, but I'm going to assume "skill" includes the hockey brain, and excludes speed & strength:
2005 - Crosby
1997 - Thornton
2009 - Tavares
2008 - Stamkos
2007 - Kane
2001 - Kovalchuk
2004 - Ovechkin
1998 - Lecavalier
2011 - RNH
2010 - Hall
2002 - Nash
2012 - Yakupov
1999 - Stefan
*caveat: It's way too early on RNH and Yakupov, in my opinion, but I gave it a shot.

Some of these lists are ridiculous. Stefan is at least top 3!

If Drouin goes first overall I'd vouch for him being top 5.

Based soley on "skill", I'd say:
Crosby
Kane
Tavares
Kovalchuk
Stamkos
Ovechkin
RNH
Nash
Yakupov
Lecavalier
Hall
Thornton
Stefan
I believe Thornton is better than most of the players ahead of him and I think, at the very least, Stamkos is better than Kane, but in terms of "skill" and now overall hockey ability/impact, that's my list.

Why do you have him nearly last, then?

Skill is not brain, it's basically the combination of skating, shooting, passing.
In that department Crosby (of course), Kovalchuk, Ovechkin and Nash should make the top of the list.

Because if skill was the only factor into being a good player, then Omark and Schremp would be NHL stars.

Haven't even read the first post yet, and I already know who is dead last:
Poor, poor Stefan.

I left out Hall, RNH, and Yakupov because I just feel it is too early to tell.

It's way too early to come to conclusions on things like this for those guys. If we had done this for Stamkos or Tavares early on they'd have been near the bottom of the list.
