It's way too early to come to conclusions on things like this for those guys. If we had done this for Stamkos or Tavares early on they'd have been near the bottom of the list.

The conversation starts with Crosby and Kane IMO. Both always seem to have complete control of the puck and what they can do with it.
Ovechkin and Kovalchuk are similar in that they're skilled, but it's really their physical talent (size, strength, speed, explosiveness) that allow them to showcase their skill.

Hockey sense isn't necessarily a skill, so how is Crosby #1?
yes he's the best player - no doubt... but Kovalchuk has a better shot and skating ability, and I assume that counts for a lot of "skill".

Crosby dominates because of his brain, not his pure skill. That said, he's still incredibly skilled.. i just wouldn't say he's the best purely based off that one word.

When it comes to Kovy, shot power and explosive/power skating are physical talent IMO. Shot release and accuracy I classify as skill though.

In terms of skill anyone ranking Stamkos over Lecavalier clearly didn't/don't watch either players. Vinny's tool box in his prime was much bigger than Stamkos'.

You have a point. But I do believe that Crosby has better passing, and skating than Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk has a better shot though.

Skating ability shouldn't count, according to OP (working on the guideline that speed is not considered a skill, and speed is essentially a function of skating ability). Honestly, I'm not sure why these weird categories need to exist; we've got the specific attributes (shooting, stickhandling, etc) and the overall result (simply how effective a player is). Throwing in middleman categories that are difficult to define doesn't make much sense to me. e.g. if we're calling shooting a skill, it's still closely-linked to strength (which is not a skill); and stickhandling is dependant somewhat on skating ability, etc. although most of this "skill" stuff is essentially dexterity and hand-eye coordination

Crosby's hand-eye coordination is ridiculous. I've never seen a player take so many passes in his feet, kick it up to his stick, and keep skating at full speed without even breaking stride. He can also feather passes through multiple sticks and onto the tape of a teammate as good or better than anyone in the league. I'd say both of those count as "skill".
Even if he had "average" hockey sense, he'd be pretty damn good with the puck on his stick.
