I mean blatant full season tanking from October to April with the only purpose to draft a Crosby-level player.

Supporting or not supporting tanking is pointless since fans have no control. Players are going to try and win every night, they don't care about some draft pick when their paycheques are on the line.

This. Hell, the drafted player would likely replace one of them. Why would they try to make that happen?

The most we have seen is teams calling up a few players from the minors to fill a few spots on the roster. That is about all the effect you can have on where you end up in the win loss column. But teams who have ended up last have for the most part earned the last place finish. I remember some of the 'tanking' Pens teams, they just were putridly bad from the start of the year on. Hell, the year before the Ovechkin draft the Pens actually ended up with one of the better records in the NHL for the last 20 games coming within one point of ending up with Cam Barker rather than Malkin. Some tanking there, eh?

The whole notion is overblown, and used to give people something to carp about that is about as meaningful as most tin hat theories.

Fans don't have a say, supporting it or not.

Well, logically you don't want to your franchise to be the next Calgary Flames. If you're going to suffer through losing, you might as well do it Penguins/Oilers style.

But I wouldn't openly discuss tanking unless it was for a can't miss prospect like a Crosby/Malkin/Ovechkin/Stamkos. Otherwise, if the draft is lacking top end talents (like the last couple of years), I would be far less inclined to actively root for tanking like I've seen on here lately.

Most definitely. I can give up one year of entertainment now for many years of entertainment in the future. Because that's all this is at the end of the day

I don't know. I don't want my team to develop a culture of losing even if they rise from the ashes at some point. I wouldn't mind a total system failure that resulted in Connor McDavid being a Duck, but outside of that I hope my team retains the distinction of never having finished last and drafting first (winning the lottery may be a different story)

Sad.

I think that if my team was in Calgary shape (not good enough to go anywhere), I'd gladly support it. If my team's going into playoffs - not so much. I hate incepting a losing mentality.

Well the Pens already did it 3 times, guess they didn't mind it in the end. Crosby, Malkin, Fleury. All 1st overall lol. Kind of a mystery why they don't win every year with those epic tank jobs.

I agree. You play with what you got and hope for the best.

Same as I would not forsake a year of my life to get a higher income the next. Who knows what happens next. Life is fragile, so is hockey players.

While it's probably the best way to ensure a competitive team for 10+ years (assuming it works and you get the player), I prefer watching a team that isn't focused around a generational player. I wouldn't feel worthy if greatness fell into my lap.

Malkin was 2nd overall and they traded up to pick Fleury.

Those Penguins teams were atrocious, due to ****** ownership. Being bad and tanking aren't the same thing. Have the Oilers been tanking far the last half-decade, too? Is it also a mystery to you why they don't win every year? Probably not, because you obviously just hate the Penguins.

Also, the Crosby draft was done via a league-wide lottery, in which the Penguins and a few others teams had the highest odds due to being the worst over the previous three seasons. So were they lucky to have been terrible at the right time? Sure. But to accuse them of tanking is a bit ridiculous.

Yes.

I would be on board with the Canucks tanking for McDavid...if that's the question.

it eats away at a certain big market fanbase that a certain small market fanbase has always had star players...which is a commodity that only big markets should have (if you follow mlb or nba). anyway, said big market fans create conspiracy theories and talk about "tanking" in order to cope with their sadness. i enjoy the **** out of it.

There are no "Crosby level" players in the draw. Whats the point in asking ?
And even if they were, NO, bc one player won't fill all your gaps.
